The ethics investigation might finally provide a reason to expel him. This stunt certainly provided some impetus.

So typically Republican to start caring about Matt Gaetz ethics only after he caused them trouble.

No, they've been working on this for a while. It's not a fast process though.

If he or an ally of his becomes Speaker this will go away. It’s all just a kabuki theater.

So, McCarthy, will take it back with a bipartisan Ukraine and appropriations bills. Everyone likes to hate on McCarthy and no one trusts him, but he's the least of evils for both sides. No one will trust him beyond the current deal, but at least they'll make the current deal and worry about future deals when they come.

McCarthy wanted to see how far the HFC would go and wanted to flag the people he will target once he resumes the speakership. You can bet that the 8 Republicans who voted him out are going to see repercussions like losing committee appointments.

That would work if democrats trusted him to keep his word. They don't and with good reason

With some of the stuff he's already done he seems to have an authoritarian streak and might not cede.

Agree. Kicking Pelosi out if her office as his first action is childish and shallow.

He did it to Steny Hoyer too. Apparently it came from McCarthy FWIW.

+1 and it was paused while DOJ was doing their investigation.

Gaetz has very few allies and I don’t think any of them will have the votes to be Speaker.

No, not crazy.

the way he banged that gavel, I dunno. he has anger issues.

I saw someone promoting Jim Jordan. I hope not. Because, after Dennis Hastert, promoting to the Speaker position another man with student wrestler molestation problems would eliminate Republican credibility on protecting children from sexual abuse.

The Dems offered a deal before yesterday and McCarthy rebuffed it and then publicly said he would not negotiate with the Dems and then announced he would not seek the office. So, no.

Are there any potential GOP speaker candidates who don't have legal or sexual issues confronting them?

First, Steny Hoyer lost his office, too.

Second, Pelosi and Hoyer both voted against McCarthy. Why would McHenry, a McCarthy ally, want to allow them to keep their posh hideaways?

Third, no one owns or has guaranteed privilege to a Capitol office. Assigning those spaces is an elaborate political game that barely gets any media coverage.

It only takes a few to elect a speaker. If you want their vote Gaetz is protected. Do you really think that is a bridge to far?

I don’t have any idea who the next Speaker will be, but I think the odds of an ACTUAL government shutdown right before Thanksgiving just went up by a lot.
