Has anyone ever left here because of the weather?

I know a work colleague who moved out of DC because of the cold. They moved to - you guessed it - Arizona. They have thrived there.

My husband wants to retire somewhere warmer -- he hates winter.

Everyone complains about the humid hot summers but I moved hear from New Orleans so, I don't really see it.

I want to move somewhere warmer desperately but not in the cards right now.

I hate and dread winter and this one is supposed to be a very cold one with lots of snow.

We love winter and get out more as a result. The heat just saps our energy. We will be retiring to New England as a result. Can’t wait.

Yes, we loved DC but left for the PNW for several reasons including humidity and mosquitoes!

I love DC weather. You get it all. In the summer it is hot, in the winter it is cold, I love the seasons.

Where? You must enjoy snow. A lot.

Maine. We do. Perhaps more than that, we despise heat & humidity and love Maine summers.

My friend moved to Oregon and now they have fire season. This summer a bunch of houses ten minutes away from her burned to the ground. So there’s that.

I hate winter and will be moving once my adult DD is settled somewhere. Want to be close to her.

Yeah, PNW gets a zero-sum season and then fire season. And you can’t enjoy the beach except to look at the water.

If you need perfect weather, Hawaii is about it?

My husband doesn’t like it but can tolerate it.

It’s become even harder after having a kid, because the baby now toddler demands to be outside more than just 15 minutes a day. So no, I can’t just go out early in the morning before it gets too hot.

Every summer from June to October I’m an angry, moody mess. Covered in mosquito bites and rashes (I have skeeter syndrome). Yes , I have tried everything.

Husband is coming around to the idea of moving north but it will come at potential risk to his job. He is fully remote but there is always chance of RTO (office in NOVA).

Has anyone made the decision to leave DMV primarily because of weather? How did it work out? Are you happy you did it? If you had to make sacrifices in other areas of life - work, proximity to parents (childcare help) - was it worth it? How did you get your spouse to support the decision if he/she wasn’t onboard initially?

Please share if you are on the other side.

😃 Move to Alaska or some other forsaken state with not a lot of people and where it's normally cold year round.

I would literally turn down about $1 million to live there again. It was such a challenge to my mental health and sense of self. I honestly do not think I could ever do it again. So I would say, just be brave and stand up for what is or is not working for you.

+1
I used to live in the cold, gray midwest, and we moved here to escape the cold and gray. I would never go back, ever, even though many of my closest friends live there. I visit, but living there was exhausting and awful, as well as really depressing in the winter.

The DMV is hot in the summer, and that's annoying, but that's the price you pay for having mild winters and really nice fall and early spring weather. The bugs aren't terrible (they were awful in the midwest when I was growing up -- I had gigantic welts all over my body from the mosquitos and had to take benedryl every day), and it's sunny most days, even when it rains.

I'll never leave this area. The grass is always greener, OP. Be thankful for what you have here. But each person is different. I coudn't stand the relentless cold of the midwest. You might enjoy it.

I also grew up in the gray Midwest. Having sun makes a big difference to me.

Left for Chicago. yes the winters are cold, but the summers are spectacular. We still come back to visit VA in the spring and fall. Also, the winters are actually better here because they know how to deal with the snow, and its so cold we don't get caught in that wintry mix/sleet mess that destroys the mid Atlantic region.
