Are people still moving to Florida?

It used to be easier before Ian. Climate change is going to make more misery for Florida. Insurance is so expensive only the stupid rich will dwell.

Six people out of my very Democratic book club have moved from Arlington to various places in Florida. Most are keeping a place in Arlington so that they can continue to vote here. The old hippies just can't release their grip on making Arlington as weird as Portland.

I live in a very red part of central Florida. Most of my neighbors are Dems. I only know this because I live near the President of the democrat women’s club. 26 homes on my street. 19 Dems.

We still own our home near DC. Our renters are moving to Florida this summer. Florida is full, people. And you hate it, remember? Stay up north. It’s so much better.

In which town? Nothing is selling in Miami.

We are about an hour from Tampa near Inverness.

You moved to landlocked FL near a body of water called "Cooter Pond'? Sounds delightful.

Hope they don't get challenged on their tax residence - voting registration is one of the things that matters in establishing a change of residence. Maybe they are Democratic enough to continue to pay Virginia taxes while living in FL.

I am the poster who is in the process of closing. I will be trying hard to make our part of Florida Blue. I hope others will have the same idea and move here to make it happen!

Some of these homes have been on market for months, just sitting there. Did something happen over the past week to motivate buyers? If so, I missed whatever that was. Not seeing much in the way of new inventory, either...maybe that's the reason and people just ran out of patience? Patience is your best friend right now.

We are in the process of closing there. We got a good deal on a house that had been sitting for 100+ days .

I’m only a few miles from the coast. I live near Crystal River which is amazing! We sail, kayak, scuba dive, and hike year round. I can be in Tampa in an hour and in Orlando in an hour. My pool is warm enough to swim in almost year round. (Year round for sure if I use the heater.). I live in one of the highest points in the state. Hurricanes are not a concern for us. We get the wind and rain, but no flooding. Cooter Pond Park is actually really pretty.

I’m sorry you are so unhappy where you are. I’ve lived all over the US and in three very different places overseas. I’ve found great things about everywhere we have lived. But I love Florida. 🐊

I'm about 30 minutes north of Orlando- more Sanford area. I'm in a large master-planned community with great schools, very desirable area for families. Some new builds but mostly we were built out in the 90s and 2000s. The market in my little corner of the state is still moving and grooving - albeit not as quickly as it was 6 months ago.

Some are snowbirds. They know the rules. I think you have to live here at least six months and a day out of the year to be a resident.

PP said her friends moved to FL, not that they spent 2-3 months there.

Great private and public schools. Great weather. Beautiful homes with great outdoor life.

This means it's primarily those with $$$ or older people, empty nesters, etc. Not many families where parents have to work for a living and cannot afford private schools would find FL desirable. It's not a great place for a second home either if you have kids who need to go to school or you have to go to work in person, it's not easy to drive there from NE.

Anonymous wrote:Yep, we are planning on it in the summer. Several friends that left DC and bought there during covid are loving their lives and staying. Biggest change they report is lack of stress that came with living in the DMV. I believe the market there stays busy in the winter because of retirees. Where we’re looking cooled off very little.

I cannot imagine the schools there and college opportunities are comparable to NE. Maybe if you are in some enclave community with great public schools or can do private schools it makes sense. I am not sure about intellectual vibe there, maybe someone who moved there can chime in

I lived there for decades and moved to DC for work. You don’t move to Florida for “the intellectual vibe.” You move there to have fun and enjoy life. Get a boat, play golf, get theme park annual passes etc. It’s great if you’re into that.
