Things to do in Philadelphia

The Museum of the American Revolution is outstanding.
Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, of course.
Old City Beer Garden is delightful; fun for the whole family.
The museum at the Science History Institute is free and excellent.
Betsy Ross house was surprisingly interesting, I'm really glad we went.

Great suggestions so far!

For a hotel, I would stay near Rittenhouse or near the Art Museum. Anything on Benjamin Franklin Parkway/Logan Circle will be nice and safe.

Did I miss the Rocky steps as a suggestion? Go to the Art Museum, run up and down the steps, you CAN line up to have your picture taken with the Rocky statue if you want to. Go to the museum if they like art--it's very nice. If they are outdoorsy, you can walk or rent bikes and go up and down Kelly Drive along the river.

Ugh, sadly, this is good advice. Be careful- there are a lot of areas in Philly that experience a lot of crime. You can be in an area that seems perfectly safe, walk a block or two, and be in a much less safe area, just like that.

So, be cautious and keep your wits about you.
