My wife thinks the metal rails on the stairs (inside and out) does not look good and would like to change it. What do you think and how would you change it, if you would? I'm personally indifferent.

| OP here, and the front porch. Thanks. |

Replacing the iron rails with wooden ones, inside and out, would look a lot better.
You didn't ask, but I would strongly consider painting this house. |
| I would do dark dark wood for rails and pillars outside, with matching dark trim, and ideally paint house as well. Inside, I don't care for rails of any kind. I would either leave the metal ones for some nostalga or to be modern you could do some kind of plexiglass thing. Or maybe if you had to do wood, something shaker style? And then maybe modernize the FP in some consistent way? Or make the rail somehow reflect the FP? I am not a designer. Just talking out my ass really. But I have often wondered what to do about those types of rails. What a great house! |

I have no idea if it is popular or not, but I would like a built in book case in place of the inside railing if this were my home.
(Nice living room OP it looks like you don't have kids! Love your hardwood) |
bookcase was obviously supposed to be a compound word
|
| I'd replace that fireplace insert/doors too. Builder grade, brass, and hideous. |
| I like them. |

That would looks great. |

| I actually sort of like the house the way it is. I usually do not like this style but for some reason on this house I think everything looks cohesive and nice, particularly outside. |
| I posted about the dark would, but I also agree with above poster. It's fine the way it is. I do like the bookcase idea though. The house has great light. |
| I agree with your wife. Add a wooden railing or build some kind of small porch off of the front. |

You'd definitely need rails of some sort by the stairs (or a bookcase), or no families with kids would ever consider buying your house.
Your floor plan looks similar to my friends' parents house in Annandale.
