Willing to travel? I hear the Please Touch Museum in Philly is amazing. I also adore Port Discovery in Baltimore.
Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna is beautiful. It's been a few years, but they used to have a topiary garden for the kids and they often have nature related classes. |
I think of 3 hours (each way) as day trips.
I love Natural Bridge, VA. There is a drive through safari zoo, the natural bridge, caverns... |
What about the new Children's museum that opened up at the National Harbor? |
Last year I took my 6 y.o. to Philadelphia for the day to the Franklin Institute. Rode the train up and back and it was a huge hit. |
zoo, ice skating, new sport, ask friends who will also be in town for play dates, canoeing on Potomac, rock creek park planetarium and nature center, hike & look for fossils on the Bay, boat rides on Potomac-sightseeing & water taxi
love taking the train idea! |
Great suggestions. Though here is a review of the national Children's museum you may want to consider:

Six Flags, it's the best time to go before school actually gets out. We go every year and have a ball. |

Don't waste your time. It's a dud. And really, a 6 year old will be bored within an hour. Not worth the trip or the admission price. |
