14 year old in Silver Spring charged with 7 month old's death...tragic!

My heart is broken for the death of the baby, the 14 year old who in my view should not have been left home overnight with his two young sibling, and the mother who I doubt had much of a choice in this life changing decision: http://www.gazette.net/article/20130210/NEWS/130219991/1122/warm-birthday-greetings/14-year-old-charged-in-infant-sister’s-death&template=gazette

Tragic!

That is so tragic. It doesn't say what time she died, so we don't know if this was in the first hour that his mother went to work or in the middle of the night, but either way, clearly this child was not equipped to babysit a 7 month old. That's horrific.

I read another article stating he was home with the baby and a 3 year old sibling.

no 14 yo should be responsible for his younger siblings on a continuous basis such as this. I heard that he'd go to school, come home, watch the kids while his mom worked the night shift. So much responsibility on this young boy. I feel sorry for him really. Not saying what he did was right.

These moms need to take care of their own babies and not put so much responsibility on older siblings.

Sad all around!

Because that's so easy when you work the night shift in a low-wage job. And besides, childcare in this area is just so darn affordable!

How clueless can you be? This is a fact of life for poor families. Why don't you pay more for everything instead of expecting low-income workers and their families to subsidize your lifestyle?

This is so sad. A crying baby can be so frustrating as we all know. That poor 14 year old. He had way too much responsibility taking care of her overnight! Agreed it wasn't right what he did, but he should not have been in charge of her in the first place.

It doesn't make it appropriate or safe for a 14 yo to be providing the care.

Poor children, and I mean it, both of them.

This is just sad. Just so sad. I cannot imagine how anyone is ever moving on in this situation.

I come from a family of journalists so I *generally* support the field but I HATE the type of gotcha journalism that involves knocking at grieving families doors. How terrible.

The article said the boy was being tried as an adult. Why?

PP: I asked that same question in another thread about this case - there are I think three of them which is annoying. No one answered me. However, there's also info in another thread that discusses that he's now being charged as a juvenile.

"Police learned that Aguiluc’s mother, Gloria Yanes, had left him to watch Larissa on Thursday when she went to work at 10:30 p.m. Aguiluc admitted in an interview with the detectives to beating Larissa and then covering her mouth and nose area with his hands when she started crying. The boy said he did this until Larissa stopped crying and then placed her in her car seat, which was in the apartment.

When the mother Yanes returned home at 5:30 a.m. Friday, she thought Larissa was sleeping and did not attempt waking her until around 6 a.m. so she could feed her. Yanes discovered Larissa was unresponsive."
