Eat some filling protein to hold you during the night.

Either work on your self control, or just keep healthy snacks in the house so that when you cave in, it's not on oreos, ice cream, chips, or other typical snacks, but things like Nature Valley or Fiber One bars (that serve their purpose of keeping you full, imo), rice cakes, fruits, healthy yogurt, or whatever.

After being careful all day, I ate 4 slices of pizza for dinner and had an apple. I do think I need to work on self control. I do exercise though everyday, which shows some self control though

Also make sure your eating enough calories via healthy food throughout the day. Otherwise that will only make you binge eat more in the evening if your really hungry.

I usually plan what I'm going to eat that day and set aside a snack for the evening. I'll splurge a little, but try to stick to healthier snacks like popcorn, trail mix (with a little chocolate mixed in), a handful of Pirate Booty and some fruit, etc.

I don't keep junk food like cookies, etc in the house. I'll bake occasionally for a treat but otherwise if I keep crap in the house I'll eat it just because it's there.

I don't ever have any snacks. And DH is very disapproving of recreational eating, so he would give me the evil eye if need be.
I bet you are feeling deprived and using it to justify bad behavior OP.

This has been my problem OP. I would eat a great breakfast and lunch, and then find myself mindlessly eating after dinner. I've started January by cutting out anything with flour (bread, crackers, pretzels, cookies, etc) It's forced me to eat more protein, which is much more filling. I'm down 5lbs.
If you're not ready to do that, then I suggest you eat more at breakfast and make sure you eat some protein (yogurt, BabyBel light cheese) plus some fruit between 3-4pm. That will take the edge off and curb the evening hunger. Also be sure to drink lots of water with your dinner. That will fill you up.

Good luck!

Apparently we have limited will power and it goes down with the day, after all the small/big decisions we made. By evening, we are easily tempted.

So the way to go is to limit temptation, not increasing will power (not much left by then). Shop when you are energetic, and do not buy any junk food. Always keep protein snacks in the fridge - 0% Greek yogurt, 2% cottage cheese, .... eat them with sugar free jam. I also keep smoked salmon in the fridge, and some Emerald 100 calorie cocoa roasted almonds packs. You can also eat some fruits with the protein snacks if you like fruits.

For main meals, like PPs said, make sure you eat plenty of lean protein (fish, chicken breast, yogurt, soy bean.... yes, we need the equivalent of 1 lb of fish per day). I also make sure there is a cooked vegetable dish with my dinner - usually 5-6 cups of green leafy vegetable cooked down to 1-2 cups. Salad takes too much chowing and I am in no mood to be a rabbit by the nightfall.

Get in bed earlier. Get washed up (BRUSH TEETH) get in pjs and get in bed. Bring your iPad, work if you have work to do, talk on the phone, whatever. But do it in bed. You will be much less inclined to walk yourself down to the kitchen for the sole purpose of eating something.

Excellent point. I need to walk away from the kitchen right now...

Drink some herbal tea & go to bed. If I feel hungry after 7:30-8:00 99% of the time I am actually thirsty and / or tired.

You've lost 5 pounds since the beginning of January? I'm so jealous I'm having convulsions.

I often eat half a box of recreational cereal at 10pm and it just has to stop.

OMG- this is me. Was just complaining about it to DH. Nightly ritual of melted cheese on popcorn after a full dinner has got to stop. Trying to lose 5 lbs. tonight is my first night of no snacking post dinner and I am struggling. I feel hungry. I think I will eat a laughing cow cheese and go to bed.

Good luck!

Yes! I've worked for every ounce of it. I turned 45 in December and feel like my metabolism is coming to a screeching halt. I've been exercising and lifting weights, but I haven't been able to move the number on the scale. Cutting out the flour and curbing the night snacking has really made the difference. 15 more lbs to go.
