Organic milk delivery recommendations -- Washington DC

Anonymous
Good Morning -

We are interested in getting milk delivered to our house (we have two little ones) since we're always running out. Can anyone recommend a good home delivery service for organic (preferably grass fed) milk?

Thanks!

I have not tried them but many in my NW DC neighborhood use South Mountain Creamery.

South Mountain has not gone through the formal organic certification, but we decided we'd rather get from a small local farm that, as far as we can tell, treats their animals and the environment sensibly, than from a factory farm that was certified organic. Here is their Q&A on the subject--

2.) Are you Organic?
No, we follow traditional farming methods which are often similar to that of organic farmers. For example, we do not give our animals growth hormones or unnecessary antibiotics. We do not use pesticides on our fields. We give our cows free choice feeding. This means they have a feed bunk in the barn that has a mixture of corn, hays, soybeans, and minerals that they can eat from. They also have access to pastures where they can graze at will. What the cows are fed here, was grown here! We also work closely with local soil conversation groups to preserve the soil and prevent soil erosion. We have many projects that we are working on regarding green energy such as a methane digester (converting cow manure to electricity) and bio-diesel (converting soybeans to fuel)!

3.) Do you use Growth Hormones or Antibiotics?
Our cows receive antibiotics only when they are sick and in need of the antibiotic. In these instances, their milk is taken off the line and NOT used until they are deemed healthy again. We never give our cows antibiotics as a preventative method nor do they ever receive hormones of any kind!

+1 Plus, it's great in the winter, when the farmers markets are closed, to get some meat delivery too.

God, that sounded obnoxious. But it's true.

should I give the deliveryman a holiday tip?

Just so you know ( and I get my milk from them as well ) it's running about $8 a gallon plus the $3.25 delivery fee.
And for OP that is always running out, you only get delivery once a week s plan accordingly.

Try Washington's Green Grocer, but I think their prices are similar to those already posted.

We get it at Costco same time we pickup diapers. 7.50? for 3 1/2 gallon cartons.

Just received notice that the price of delivery is going up to $4.99 a week. Is anyone else thinking that this is getting a little too expensive? I get two gallons a week, so the price is now over $10 gallon from South Mountain.

Economies of scale, right? We get 3 gallons. But, it's not that different than the grocery store. Most organic milk in most grocery stores are $9 a gallon if you buy in a carton (and we never cared for the plastic jugs).

But, yeah, SMC ain't cheap. I've been joking about buying the cow.

Peapod charges $9.95 for orders under $75, I think, PLUS a fuel surcharge. I was a bit disappointed with the delivery fee increase as well. But the quality of food matters a lot to us. I would give up something else in my life before I gave up the milk. At some point, it may get too expensive and I have to turn to other options. But not yet.

You'd think economies of scale would work in our favor, but I guess not...

Is that for everyone or do they go by distance from the farm and the amount you buy
