I blame Adam Lanza's mother.

She lived in a idyllic town of 27K people.
She lived with (by all accounts) a mentally disturbed son.
And yet she felt the need to own multiple guns, including a semi-automatic rifle.

She did not keep these guns out of her disturbed son's possession.
Because of her COMPLETE ineptitude, she died.
Unfortunately she took 26 other innocent people with her.

I'm 35 and learned at age 30 that my father owned numerous guns in my childhood. Neither I or my brother EVER knew this. Because he was a responsible gun owner. NEVER ONCE did he mention them, take them out or keep them unlocked. I myself will never own a gun.

I agree. She was negligent.

I'm going to hold off judgment until there's a bit more confirmation of the stories coming out, but yes, I do feel that is was unwise for this person to be in a place where he had access to guns.
She might have been negligent, but ultimately we also need more gun control.

Really? Stop

But you also need to ask - why did this woman need these weapons? B/C the 2nd amendment allowed her to?

How about some gun control?

Shut the fuck up. If your son or daughter committed a crime should we blame you? Tragedy can strike anyone. No one is above it including you. And assigning blame before knowing all the facts reflects poorly on you.

Agree with OP. if I had guns and my kid used them to kill- I would blame myself.

I would not blame if they obtained them elsewhere.

Wtf did she have so many guns-- ESP with an unstae person in her home.

I can't say that because I don't know her or the situation or so many facts about the situation yet. I marvel at all the people who apparently can pass judgement without knowing that either. I hope you are not the same people posting questions here about raising small kids with small problems . . .

God willing I never find myself as the single parent of an adult who needs mental help. I don't even know how you'd go about getting that in today's world.

Don't keep guns in your house if you have a mentally ill/unstable person in residence.

Simple.

Well, hopefully, if you found yourself as the single parent of an adult who needs mental help, you would start by not having a collection of guns in your home. Don't you think that's what a reasonable parent of a troubled person would do?

Maybe I'm naive or a defendant's attorney, but just because the guns appear to have been registered in her name, does no one see any other scenario besides that she bought them?

Guns in your home are much more likely to kill someone living in the home than a stranger. Unfortunately in the Newtown case, these guns not only killed the person living in the home, but 26 children and adults.

Guns are used to kill people. Why are we shocked when they're used accordingly?

Not necessarily. Two handguns and a rifle isn't a collection. It is one concealed carry weapon, one open carry weapon and a hunting rifle. Not a big deal.

Well, in this case, it was a big enough deal to kill 26 people, 20 of them children 10 and under. Seems like a pretty big deal to me.

Not a big deal unless you have a mentally unstable person in your home.
Remember the kid a few years back that shot up the Fairfax County police parking lot? Well documented history of issues. Family was "trying to get help" for the kid, but father was also keeping a ton of guns in a glass front cabinet that the kid was easily able to get at.

I'm really sorry if your family has a glorious tradition of gun collecting and ownership. If you have a mentally troubled person family member who can gain access to those weapons, you don't get to keep them! You'll just have to chose between your precious, precious guns and your family members.
And the police officers
And the 20 little children

Hard choice, right?
