How many CS did you apply to, and how many did you get into?

For those who did the lottory last year, how many times did you roll the dice - or how many schools did you apply to? And, how many schools did you get into?

Applied to 8. Got into two before school started but determined we didn't really want those, so turned them down within a day. Got into first choice two weeks after school started, and we are very happy. Never got into any others.

My bet: most people apply to all of these, plus or minus a few depending on interest or location.

1. Cap City
2. E.L. Haynes
3. LAMB
4. Mundo Verde
5. Stokes
6. Yu Ying
7. Inspired Teaching

Applied to basically all the decent charters for PS3 (11 total). Got into Appletree right away (declined) and was eventually offered a spot at Bridges PCS (accepted). Did not receive a spot from any others.

I'm wondering - if you are going to decline anyway (as two posters did) - why even apply?

We applied to 9 and got into 3: Appletree, Bridges (accepted), and LAMB. We also had a ridiculous no. in the low teens at Cap City but never got a spot. I would say that our results weren't average. All the other families we know only got into 1 maybe 2 charters.

Minimize the potential for regret? Doesn't cost anything? Might as well? There is no limit. Actually, many high application charters don't even given you meaningful opportunities to tour the school unless you've been given a spot, further fueling the "application inflation".
DCPS is different: not only do you have a limit of six, you also need to rank your choices. So you really need to think before you apply because both choice and ranking will affect your choices from the day you hand in your lottery ticket.

Um...have you ever participated in the DCPS and DCPCS lottery? General practice is to apply everywhere that looks even remotely viable, see how your lottery results pan out, and make your decision from there. I'm the PP who declined Appletree. Obviously, I applied because I thought it would be a good option, and if it had been my only option, I would have gladly taken it! I declined because I got into a school that better met my needs.

Just to say, not everybody reasons like that. For example, when we entered our three-year-old into the lottery, we only put one option down, namely the one our older one attended. The other option was to leave him in the daycare he was in at the time. I indeed didn't feel it was useful to put any other options down or even attend any open houses. And we got in, I should add.

It's the same logic - you put down everything you'd consider acceptable, and then go from there, even if it's just one school. And having sibling preference is a whole different ballgame.
Anonymous
That was with sibling preference,PP. not
Really relevant. What did you do for your first?

I'm the pp who declined the first two. I determined that they weren't good long term solutions, and that the current daycare was much easier and would probably cost about the same when you consider aftercare and camps with a lot more hassle. The daycare had its ups and downs, so I wanted to make sure that I had other options when the time came. But there are some that I didn't research thoroughly so I might not have chosen them in the end either way - I did apply to 11 schools total, so I couldn't go as in depth into all the research as I would have otherwise.

We chose our neighborhood school and that was it. It helped that it is a good option, and there of course wasn't the same kind of insane run on PK3 and PK4 some seven years ago... But it also helped us to sit down and make a clear list of criteria for what we needed and wanted. Proximity to home or work ranked high for us for elementary school.

Applied to 7, offered spots in 2. Never got anywhere close on the wait lists for the other 5.

Two years ago, applied to Yu Ying. Got in. Only school I even considered. No regrets.
