Can stomach virus cause heartburn??

Anonymous
Came down with a bug yesterday...no vomiting or diarrhea, but sick-to-my-stomach queasiness, with body aches and chills.
Since it's onset I've been forcing myself to drink, but have only eaten a piece of toast and some crackers. Last night I started experiencing horrible, painful heartburn - on the right side of my chest, at the top of my rib cage and through my back. Pepto and Zantac haven't helped, which has me concerned. Has anyone experienced heartburn with a bug like this? If it's heartburn, shouldn't the mess help? I'm in agony, and exhausted...can't sleep well. Thanks.

Meant meds, not mess.

I wonder if it could be your gall bladder, it sounds like that to me. I had mine out when I was 18 (I'm 35) and the pain was awful and similar. If it doesn't subside soon, I'd call the doc. If it worsens, maybe even the ER for an ultrasound. Good luck.

Sounds like gall bladder to me too. I've had several gallbladder attacks and they all sound like this. It is most definitely not a bug.

Call the doc or go to the ER.

PP here. Another thing about gallbladder attacks is that they normally last 7 - 12 hours and then subside on their own.

So .... if you are feeling better, you might still want to talk to your doctor about this. They can check for gallstones with an abdominal ultrasound.

And if you aren't feeling better, your gallbladder could have ruptured so you should go to the ER.

PP, did you have your gall bladder removed?

As one who has had my gall bladder removed, I agree with this. Attacks will subside on their own, but surely to come back. If you're feeling feverish I would head to ER or doc at the very least....

Not yet... but I have a GI doc appt at the end of the month and I suspect he will say to take it out. The last attack I had I went to the ER, the pain was so bad, and they did an ultrasound that showed gallstones.

Op are you ok?

OP here - thank you for your feedback. I couldn't get in with my doc on Thursday so went to Righttime Pediatrics instead. The doc examined me and felt my symptoms were related to a virus, and I felt much better later that day.
However, I read a lot about gall bladder attacks and if I ever go through this again, I will get an ultrasound. My brother had his gall bladder removed last year and it is now on my radar. Thanks again.

Yes!!!! It is running through my household and we all have the same symptoms. It starts with upset stomach, chills, and then the heartburn so bad it almost chokes you! The hearburn and reflux last for about 6 hours and then comes the watery bowel movements and the gurglling intestines and severe gas. Try not to eat much becuase as soon as you do then comes the intestinal pain! Going on day 3 and still not 100 percent!

About 4 wks ago I came down with what I assume was a very mild stomach bug. I had the usual nausea for about a day or two and only one day of diarrhea, but what really threw me was for the first time I experienced extreme bloating and persistent heartburn. I had never known what heartburn was before but when I thought back, I realized I started feeling the heartburn about two days prior to the stomach bug. All symptoms went away after a few days, but the heartburn remained for a week and a half. During that time I cut out my morning coffee, all dairy, chocolate and refined sugars, and almost all breads.. I felt completely cured. Then about two weeks later I became reintroducing those foods, and days after my heartburn and indigestion came back. Has anyone else experienced this following a weird stomach episode? I know I don't have a spotless history of digestion, but I also had never experienced heartburn or much indigestion. I am a 30 yr old woman who eats mainly home cooked heathy meals with the occasional dining out. I never drink alcohol and have never smoked. I also exercise at light to moderate intensity about 3-5x week. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I'm having the same symptoms after a virus too. It's been going on off and on for weeks. My son had the virus and has been having persistent stomach problems as well. His seems to be lower gi issues. But mines is definitely severe heartburn. ive never had heartburn before. It is good to know others are experiencing similar issues. I'm just hoping it goes away soon.

Like you, I believe that my heartburn symptoms are related to a virus. When I first got up yesterday morning I seemed to be okay. My friend and I had to force her cat in the cat carrier to take her to the vet. As we were waiting for the vet I felt bla and sorta sweaty and since I had no chair I sat on the floor. I do wonder if I caught a flue bug that someone might have had there. All through the rest of the day I felt more sick. I took the generic brand of Tylenol about every 4 hours. Then I started with chills, I have acix reflux which prilosec usually helps always, but some reason it never helped to take away that severe indigestion like heartburn. I have no gallblader either. I threw up my fried potatoes and onions. I usually have no problem with heartburn as long as I'm taking my Prilosec. I do know this is a virus, since I threw up last night. I was in and out of the bathroom several hours and I heard my stomach roaring I knew I would be really sick.I was feverish and chills. I layed down a long while. I felt terrible a prayer for the Lord's healing hand to touch me. I then started having direareha. For me I have no gall bladder so I can't blame it on that. After I threw up I felt a little bit better. I slept couple hours. I searched for a website about a heartburn virus If it were such a thing? Then I saw this message about heartburn along with this virus. And I thought maybe I'd reply to your message. It is a very miserable virus I know. Although, I have no name for the virus since I haven't gone to the doctor yet, which I despise to go. I did want to see if there were anyone else with these symptoms. Today, is March 4, 2016 and I hope to feel better tomorrow. I guess we will see then.

Yeah. I too have some kind of stomach virus. I got it from my kids. They both had gotten it. For them, they were able to get over it in about 12 hours. I just started having symptoms early yesterday morning. Terrible pains in my stomach. Body aches, headaches, diarrhea and acid reflux. I later began to have a fever with intense heartburn. I started taking Aleve with Ibuprofen at the first signs of problems. I also felt bloated and wanted to feel like throwing up but stopped myself from doing it. I also prayed for healing and also began looking for ways to get better on the internet and found this blog. Could not sleep because of all the pain. It's been over 24 hours and am much better today(Thank God) but still recovering. Going to try to get some sleep. Stomach is super sore but I think I'm over the hump! I'm wondering if an anti-acid medicine would've worked for the acid reflux and heart burn.
