What do I wear to a bat mitzvah party?

The last bat mitzvah I went to was in 1983. What does grown-up woman wear to something like this? Afternoon service, evening party, Reform Jewish family.

What you would wear to any party -- probably a cocktail type dress.

Agreed. It's not hard. What do you wear to a bridal shower? A baby shower? A nice dress that's not too cleavarific, or a skirt and blouse.

Ignore pps. It is like a wedding. NOT a shower. Is it black tie? Wear what you would wear to a wedding. Is it at a hotel? The temple? The venue should indicate how fancy it is. To the service, a suit will work. Either a dressy one if you have it, or a regular work suit. Just err on the side of conservative for the service (no bare shoulders) but don't worry about that for the party at all.

Well, if the invitation said black tie then I'm guessing OP wouldn't have asked. I'd agree that a suit would work well. And I personally wouldn't wear a suit to a wedding, would you? I mean, i would if i were 50+, maybe. But otherwise I'd wear a nice dress to a bat mitzvah, like PPs suggested.

Please stop posting here. You clearly don't know about bat mitzvahs. There is a service portion and a party. You wear something different for each. One is a religeous ceremony in a synogague during the day, the other is an evening celebratory affair. I simply don't understand why you come to a thread like this looking for a fight.

OP here.... The invitation didn't specify anything about dress, one way or the other. So.... Should I plan to wear one thing for the service, then change for the party? And.... Is a black dress okay? I would not wear black to a wedding, but is it appropriate for the Bat Mitzvah party?

Black is perfectly fine. If it is an afternoon service, is the party directly after? In that case you would not change. Wear a cocktail style dress and bring some sort of wrap. The invitation should indicate if it is right after. Or you could ask the parents.

The separate service and party ones usually have the service in the am. What are the times?

Service is at 430, dinner/ party follows at a restaurant

And thanks. I feel silly bothering the parents with this when they already have so much to do.

Not necessarily. The service in question is not in the am.

Then do not change. A cocktail dress is fine.

Ok, that's different. One outfit. Is it at a place like Magianos or like Tragarra? You can really get away with anything. Let the venue dictate. If your dress is sleeveless or has spaghetti straps, I would bring some sort of cover up for the service.

It's in Los Angeles, adding another layer of mystery... I don't know what people wear in LA!
