Rug for under kitchen table

Anonymous
I just moved into a new apartment that has wall-to-wall carpet. I have a 3.5 year old. Our kitchen isn't big enough to eat in, so I have the kitchen table in an small alcove off the living area, which is carpeted. DS is a pretty good eater, but he is only 3.5 and spills are going to happen.

I need a rug or mat to put under the table to protect the carpet. My mom is recommending I look for an indoor/outdoor rug, I'd prefer something more like jute and less plastic-y. I need to be able to clean it up easily, it has to look decent (since it's visible from the whole apartment) and it needs to be cheap. Super cheap. It's a round table with 4 chairs and the alcove is just under 6 feet wide (and only about 4 feet deep, so the table and chairs overlap into the living area). Any ideas? A bamboo mat? Look for something circular? Square? Rectangle and put one end under the hutch? I'm stumped.

Also, what can I put under the rug to keep it from sliding around on top of the carpet? Will I need a rug pad? I have a lightweight rug with no pad in my bedroom and it's constantly wrinkled and bunched up. I realize that pulling chairs in and out will bunch and wrinkle whatever I put under the table, but minimizing the bunching would be great.

I'd just get this. Unless your apartment is super fancy.

I wouldn't be concerned with the look of it, either. It is a temporary item.

Please get something nicer than a plastic pad, that just says I give up. Here are some options for indoor/outdoor rugs in a good price point. I would just go with rectangle or square that can sit underneath the table. some ideas below (with no idea what your space looks like but indoor/out door doesn't have to mean ugly and it is hard to get food out of jute...).

We put a kilim from pottery barn under our kitchen table 6 years ago and it looks good as new. 3 kids. Colorful enough to hide stains.

Seagrass is great for use under tables. It has a natural stain-resistance -- spills wipe right off. I got a nice one on Amazon. They make pads that are designed to be used with a rug on top of carpet. If you get something like a Kilim, be aware that rug dye can bleed onto carpet, if you don't put down a good pad.

don't get jute -- it doesn't clean easily at all. i got a wool rug from tuesday morning. colorful (hides stains) and easy to clean.

When our DD was younger, we cut a shower curtain liner down to size and laid it under her chair at mealtimes. Cheap, easy to rinse off, easy to fold and store between bouts of spaghetti.

Just go on overstock and do a search for rugs with synthetic fibers. I buy one for around $250 once a year, or as needed.

Try an indoor/outdoor rug - they're on sale right now b/c stores are trying to get rid of their summer patio items. World Market has some nice ones, as does overstock. But even stores like PB and C&B have good ones on sale right now.

Home Depot sells cheap area rugs, some that look like Persians, in the $200 - $300 range I believe.

Don't get an indoor/outdoor one! They're made to let water drain right through, and the same will apply to grape juice! get something with a solid latex backing, like this

if you want to protect from spills.
