Offer/Tryouts Etiquette

See ya there.

Congrats to your kid!

For the offer, how much time do they give you before you have to make a decision and order a deposit?

Some of these parents have such huge egos and just want to collect offers they aren't interested in for their kids.

Any advice other than 1) once you accept an offer, stop attending other clubs tryouts and 2) you should contact them if you attended at least one tryout to let the coach know you are no longer trying out, is just making life more difficult for the coach trying to put together a team.

Wondering this too. We are being pressed to give a decision but still have tryouts for two other clubs in progress or coming up. Kid has a preference for a different club but worries about turning down a sure bet when nothing else is set in stone. Have already asked for a little more time, don’t think we will be given any more…

Clubs only give 48 hours. This is the problem and why clubs try to screw kids over.

Example: My kid tries for MYS last week and gets an offer last Friday. Well, he only has two days to accept it. But, VYS and Great Falls are this week. Then next week is Arlington.

What if your kids want to see the best offer they can get before choosing...they can't. We have to play the game and literally accept each offer (with a $300-$400 deposit) and move onto the next tryout.

Again, the tryout system is to screw the kids. There is nothing fair about it. I mean, 48 hours to accept or lose the spot? Really?

Do clubs get super pissed when you do this and then say never mind a week later? I feel like I am too honest to do this. I hate it. I understand that other kids are waiting to hear, but more time should really be given. Life isn’t fair, and people with more skill/talent/qualifications will always have more choices in front of them than people with less of these things. I certainly understand being on the other end of it and having to wait longer if my kid is on the bubble for a particular club.

Annoyed, yes. Super pissed and black list you? No. They won't remember you come next year and they get that $$ deposit.

if you need more time to make a decision, you just talk to the coach and let them know. that's all you have to do.

If they say tough luck you have to accept or decline in 48 hours then 1) they didn't care about your kid to begin with and they are not at a level where they could have made the team or 2) the coach is a jerk and you wouldnt want to play for them anyway

The club is trying to build the roster and let the kids that were at the tryout know as soon as possible. If a top kid delays, that delays offers for the kids on the bubble between 1st and 2nd teams, which delays the offers for 2nd team, which delays the offers for 3rd team, and so on. That makes those kids feel less valued and may lead to them accepting other offers they would not have if they got their offer on time. So do what is right for you, but know that means other kids are sitting at home with their offer delayed because of it.

Some coaches may let that happen for the right player, some coaches are indecisive, others won’t want a player that doesn’t really want to be there and will give the spot to someone who wants it.

If everywhere did their tryouts within the same two week period, problem would be solved.

Agree with this. As a parent who has had a kid on bubble and/or lowest team waiting for the offer while you (and your kid) knows that offers have gone out and you are waiting. That aside, definitely talk to the coach(es) about your thoughts and they may or may not give you a bit of time.

Unless you are a serious top player on a high tier team clubs won't give you more than an extra day or two. Still not enough time to try out for another club. This is why as parents we need to put our kids first. Again, clubs have no loyalty to kids.

There are other kids waiting to hear who will get the spot a kid doesn't take. It's not fair to them have to wait indefinitely.
