FTM question re: baby sleeping

Anonymous
First time mom here who is generally clueless about all things baby! I was told at my baby care class to put the baby down for a nap if she is showing signs of being tired (yawns, hands at the mouth, some more signs I don't remember.. oops!). Does that still apply even if she has already been sleeping a lot that day? Today she napped from 11:30 am - 2:30 pm and started to yawn a whole bunch of times after we played for an hour and a half. I put her in the swing and she cried for about 30 seconds but then fell asleep immediately. I just feel bad putting her down if she has already slept so much, but at the same time, it's not good for her ot be overtired, right?

How old is your daughter? Personally I always put the baby down for a nap if he seemed tired, regardless of how much he had already slept.

She's 10.5 weeks old - thanks, that's kind of what I figured, but it makes me feel bad to put her down!

Let the baby sleep all she wants, she needs it at this age. They'll want to sleep less as they get older.

Yep! At this age, she might nap after only 1.5-2 hours of being awake. We followed that guideline till 4-5 months and it worked pretty well for us.

At that age, it is best not to keep them up for about 90 min at a time--that's NORMAL. My kids didn't get to a 2 hour wakefullness period during the day until about 4 months.

Baby's this age typically stay awake for 1-2 hours before needing a nap.

Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child is a godsend re: normal sleep patterns (if you can get past the poor editing).

I agree and second the recommendation to read that book. It's a really helpful book (I think essential) for learning about what sleep needs are. What approach you choose is up to you but just knowing how many hours they should be getting and how frequently is really important.

+1.

Sleep is so important to your baby at this age. They learn when they sleep.

So that I can live vicariously, pls let that baby sleep! I'm amazed when I hear about babies napping - next to impossible to get DS asleep and out of my arms. Don't wake that baby and enjoy your time "off."
