I've read negative reviews about the company (Osprey) that Ikea College Park recommends, and was hoping that someone here could recommend a company/handyman/contractor with significant experience installign ikea kitchens.
1. Yes, we are sure we want ikea (it fits our budget, our TH and our plans) 2. No, we cannot do it ourselves, we are not remotely handy 3. No, we cannot ask our usual handyman to do it - i wans't thrilled with the work he did intalling a basic cabinet in our bathroom thanks!!!! |
Try Chuck at Inex construction. He specializes in Ikea cabinets. His crew overhauled my small kitchen in 3 days. http://inexconstruction.net/ |
I so wish my husband could start a side business doing this - he's installed 2 IKEA kitchens himself ![]() |
We did it ourselves, but I met a lot of different installers hanging around the kitchen department. Some were clearly more knowledgeable than others, and some clearly had a good relationship with the Ikea staff, which I would take as a good sign of knowledgeable and does a lot of work for them. I would consider getting cards at the store.

I don't have a recommendation for an installer but I want to let you know how happy we are with our IKEA cabinets! We have them in our rental apartment and they look great. I would not hesitate to use them in our next kitchen. My father is a master cabinetmaker by trade and he helped my brother do his kitchen with IKEA cabinets. He was so impressed with the quality and tells everyone that IKEA cabinets are a great value. |
Thanks! I'll contact them for sure! Can you say how much your kitchen cost? Did you use Ikea cabinets and counters? |
Thank you for posting this. Not the OP, but hoping to embark on a kitchen remodel of our new house shortly and this makes me so happy to hear as we are on a BUDGET!! ![]() |
We recently redid our kitchen with Ikea cabinets (and are very happy with them about 6 months in). Listen to the designer when s/he tells you to consider lower drawers instead of shelves. I wish I had! We were putting lower cabinets in where none had been, so we didn't have much experience with losing stuff in the back of the cabinet; drawers would be so much better.
But what I really wanted to say is that you can probably beat Ikea's countertop prices by a good bit. We went with Counter Intelligence in Silver Spring for Silestone and they were far cheaper than Ikea. The only downside is that it may take longer--all of your cabinets need to be installed so they can measure, then the slab has to get cut, which can take another couple of days. Ikea might do it the same way, but it's worth checking prices elsewhere unless you're doing the basic butcher block or laminate. Our total cost for cabinets was about $4500, counters were $2500. We installed the cabinets ourselves, but I'd guess labor might be about 50% of the total. |
I agree. People get really snobby about IKEA kitchens, but for that pricepoint the quality is really good. My father is actually an architect and he specifies IKEA cabinets when that fits with the client's budget. Much better value than cheap Home Depot cabinets. |
That's so funny, because our neighbor who did her kitchen with IKEA before us (we basically stole her ideas) heard the exact same thing from her contractor friend with an interior designer wife. Good quality with a decent warranty. We renovated the kitchen in our TH for less than $4K with IKEA cabinets and granite countertops. And it really did sell our house. Much better than the builder grade crap that was in there before. I keep telling my husband to post pictures of our current kitchen on that HGTV Rate My Space site. It looks phenomenal. We paired the black-brown cabinets with stainless appliances, a greyish granite counter and blue backsplash and accents. LOVE IT! |
we did our rental home with IKEA cabinets. We had our contractor friend install them..he customized some as well. Got a higher end counter top elsewhere. Truth be told---i love that kitchen much more than the very expensively re=modeled high-end one with very expensive cabinets in our new house. |
Total cost with Chuck was $6k (cabinets, labor, floor, paint, installing a new stove and built-in microwave). |
DO Tell the details! Where did you get the countertops? Did you install yourself? |
The countertops in the $4K kitchen we got at a place out in Sterling and we went back to them for the countertops in our current kitchen. I think it was Sky Granite and Marble? The countertops were @$1600 (materials, installation, plus a new sink and faucet) in the first and @$2500 (materials, installation + sink/faucet) in the new house. My husband did the install mostly himself (with a little help from our lovely handy neighbor who had installed her own IKEA kitchen as well). The bulk of the project took about a week (he took vacation to do this) in the TH. The wiring issues that they found took longer than the cabinet install. They installed some new can lights and pendant lamps, which were also included in the costs. We had already replaced the appliances in there and the flooring, so that is not included. Our kitchen in our SFH took MUCH longer and was more expensive as it was larger. But, all told, including appliances, we probably spent @$12K on that? |
We are redoing the kitchen in our new house with Adel White Ikea cabinets. We spent 5K on the cabinets. We ordered Cambria quartz countertops and a Blanco silkgranit sink for a total of $3,700. DH is building the entire kitchen so no labor. With new induction range, dishwasher and vent hood, we spent about $13k total. |
