Kind of a broad response to a single, anonymous post that could be a troll, Republican or bot, dontcha think? |
Please explain why that is, specifically. What has dropped about Columbias education product that makes it now inferior to what it was. I bet you cannot. |
Laughing to keep from crying, we've all been there. |

The realization that Columbia GS is so much worse than the school itself or a school like Emory. These students get a Columbia undergrad degree but the school has a near 60% transfer acceptance rate and test score in the 1200's. These could never compare to any T30 school, and they make up 25% of the student population. This wasn't public knowledge until the cheating scandal. |
Did OPs kid get into Columbia GS or Columbia College (CC) of Columbia University? Right out of HS, GS is not an option. It's an automatic CC, unless one applies to Columbia Barnard or Columbia Engineering. |
Nope |
Umm, no sorry wrong. Everyone knows about programs like GS. Most of the elites have them. Including the H in HYP. Books have been written about them, like this one published over a decade ago: https://homerbookstore.indielite.org/book/9780399164309 Just because YOU didn't know doesn't mean the rest of the world does not. When you learn something it is great, but that does not mean reality has changed one iota. So, you have failed, and may try again if you wish. What has dropped about Columbia's education product that makes it now inferior to what it was. |
This is so stupid. These are all great schools and it’s really a waste of time to argue which one is “a step above” when they’re really all on about the same level or similar enough in terms of a academic excellence and post grad outcomes. |
Many of the pro-Palestinian protestors ARE Jewish students. JVP and SJP include many anti-Zionist Jewish students. The protests reflect a youth voice more than an ethnic voice. That said, poor Columbia is being sued by both sides. It's impossible to keep everyone happy in this climate. Once the nascent paradigm becomes the dominant and generally accepted paradigm, everything should settle down, just as it did after the BLM protests. |
Depends on major.
STEM: Rice Amherst: Pre-law or med, Business Columbia: Government or international affairs. |
Hi, I am a huge Rice fan. But just for econ, I would consider Columbia academics over Rice. Social Sciences are good at Rice but it is not its strength. Though Rice has Baker and Kinder Institutes which opens up amazing social science research opportunities at the undergrad level. Lot of universities have research but it is important to see whether undergrads can access these-at Rice you can. But you have to look at other factors and decide--undergrad quality of life is very different at Columbia and Rice. Rice gives a easier transition and is designed for a undergrad community. It has an intimate and friendly campus. OP, you have to decide what is a good fit for your child. |
I have not dog in this fight, but thing that gives me pause about Columbia is their massive PR machine. The amount of time they spent making up fake data and then trying to discredit their own professor when they were caught is incredible. We see that same kind of spin on this thread.
That’s one of the reasons Columbia’s reputation has declined. |
This is silly. Columbia GS is a noble program. The only downside is how skimpy the financial aid for those students is. |
That’s bad. But the Republican hate machine is clearly trying to crush it, for whatever reason, and decent people, including conservatives with a conscience, should be standing up for it, just as we ought to stand up for the right for Brigham Young to operate in a more conservative way. Political organizations shouldn’t be trying to persecute schools just to show everyone who’s boss. |
