Apparently (from the most recent posts above) the hater is a Bollywood agent who is pissed that their vapid client wasn’t cast in the role.

I responded to this a few pages back. Emma is below average for an everyday Indian person, not below average for an actress. I am definitely not an agent and I don’t know any actual Bollywood actresses except that I know there are many gorgeous Indian women.

So are you jealous of her success and how much love she is getting, both here and IRL? Or are we supposed to believe that you’re solely motivated by how the casting decision affects your ability to enjoy the blockbuster hit limited Netflix series? (That is apparently providing millions with great enjoyment.)

Jeff’s pointed comments a few days ago are aimed straight at you.

Why can’t a person have an opinion that’s different than yours? We’re not jealous. We’re confused. I’m not Indian and don’t live in a heavily Indian community, but every single Indian woman I know in real live is much prettier than this actress. It think it’s racist for agents to cast such a below average actress to represent Indians on a Western stage. It’s like whoever did this thinks all Indians look the same and are ugly or something. I’m offended not jealous.

OK, now I finally understand. You feel that this is really no different than a Beauty and the Beast visual pairing, and that racists who want a feel-good storyline about a disfigured minority woman charity case are betraying their oblivious white privilege.

Are you Indian? I’m pretty sure my Indian friends would not consider Emma pretty.

If she was an everyday person, no one would comment on her looks. She isn’t ugly. She just isn’t pretty, definitely not pretty to be the lead of a rom com. I didn’t watch it. I think if the lead was prettier, it would entice me to watch it but it doesn’t.

I could totally see someone like Dex falling deeply for one of these beauties:

The issue here isn’t race, it’s the believability. Someone with Annika’s below average looks would find love too, but with someone who is equally unattractive, but has other great qualities like intelligence or ambition.

Fellow South Asian, this is how I felt too. So many beautiful desi actresses!

I havent watched the show, but is Dex rich? Because he is not getting these women in your post based on his looks. They are out of his league. If his character is not rich, then it means you are comfortable with Indian beauties being cast with men that are not as attractive as they are, but not ok with the reverse...

He was rich until he lost his money and had to work as a barista.

I haven't watched it. But you understand this is entertainment right? Try to suspend reality a bit.

Have never watched so looked these people up. What is so great about Dex? He looks like Ashton Kutcher with a bad haircut. Emma is reasonably attractive.

He did not ever have to work as a barista. Read the actual reviews by art critics. The novel picks on Shakespearean themes and even religious once. Both slinging flat whites and Emma were him doing penance.

There is a charming, smart, good looking guy at my work who is married to a very unattractive woman (it's her face, what you might call a "horsey face). They have been married 7 years or so and I think together since college and have a toddler and seem to be very happy and well-matched aside from the looks thing. Her body is fine, and her style is good, it's just her face -- so it isn't like she went downhill after they married or something.

But like I said, I think they are super happy and they are well matched. Looks aren't everything.

Was she rich?

I think the poster you are responding to is suspending any kind of judgment/reality. It’s the posters who go on about the mismatch or that Emma isn’t attractive enough who can’t.
