Dress for white tie event

Anonymous
Other than a full length dress/gown, are there any other guidelines for a white tie event?

I have never heard of a white tie event. Is this more formal than black tie?

Bring out your best fur and get your jewelry out of the vault.

It's an opportunity to pull out the full on, full length, taffeta and sequins. No other requirements for the ladies. Gloves are no longer mandatory.

yes, white tie is more formal than black tie. Men wear tailcoats, white tie and vest, and a pique shirt (no pleats, different than a tux shirt).

At some events, the long white gloves are definitely still expected, although they probably will not send you home if you show up without them. I'd stay away from anything other than white gloves (ideally leather, but they are expensive and hard to find), as they tend to look somewhere between pageant and bordello.

I'd also stay away from jersey fabrics, although a lot of so-called formal dresses are made from that these days.

If you have the time, get an updo, as that is more formal than wearing your hair down.

And have fun!

Thanks for the responses. LOL about getting the jewels and furs out!

What about a dress like this: http://www.lordandtaylor.com/eng/womensapparel-dresses-shortcocktail-Ring_Waist_Corkscrew_Ruffle_Dress-lordandtaylor/200102

I just want to say that I'm jealous! I really miss dressing up for formal events.

Full length gown, no cocktail or tea length dresses, no bare shoulders. A shawl and opera length gloves are appropriate acessories.

I think you should aim for the worst-dressed list like Sarah-Michelle Gellar:

hahaha.
I think your dress is nice. Any shoes in mind?

I would do something more formal than that dress, but I'm sure women will be wearing a variety of styles:

Op here - I'm not sure which is worse, that dress or the price tag. Eeek!

I think it depends on how old OP is. I'm 33 and that's too matronly for me. OP how old are you?

I'm 39. I think my MIL could rock that dress, but it's not for me. I was able to find a few pics from last year's event, as well as speak to a guest. While all men were in white tie, the formality of the women's dresses varied. All floor length, but everything from strapless to sleeves, slim silouettes to ball gown, so I feel pretty good about the dress I like.

No bare shoulders? Really? That's probably going to be tough to find.

OP I think the dress you picked out is too informal for a white tie event.
