Why does Mary Cheh abandon her ward?

Anonymous
I understand that Ward 3 has a different set of problems from a Ward 5 or 8 or 7, but the job of the council member is to look out for the best interests of her constituency to the best of her ability. It seems like Mary Cheh has basically abandoned the ward and left us to fight for ourselves. In terms of crime, schools, liveablity, business, etc she's not really an advocate. And she'll never get voted out because shes a Democrat. There is no competition.

You do realize there is this thing called the primary, and you can run a candidate against her there. If she is as bad as you say, she should get dumped.

If on the other hand, what you really mean is that you want Republican values, you need to move.

Prof. Cheh would really be better suited as an at-large member. She sees her portflolio as a "big policy" one.

I have generally found at-large Councilmember Phil Mendelson to be very responsive on local (ie Ward 3) concerns, although he's also known for his work on city-wide issues.

Can you give 3 examples of what you're talking about, OP? I'm not a knee-jerk fan of Cheh but I can, off the top of my head, think of many "crime, schools, liveablity, business" issues she's involved in.

In fact, on some of those sub-issues (business, liveability) I actually disagree with some of her positions. Which is how I know for certain she's got them on her mind.

So put up or shut up.

The bad news for you is that Phil now lives a few blocks from me in Takoma. The good news is that he was always ready to listen to us when he lived in Ward 3, so I'm sure you'll still find him as responsive as ever.

He moved from McLean Gardens?

Schools: Her answer was not to fix Hardy and help with Deal overcrowding it was simply, let's build a new one. She knew it would never pass and she can wipe her hands clean of the issue. Plus her kids went to GDS so what the hell did she care. Not to mention she supported VIncent Gray when 80% of her constituents voted for Fenty.

Crime: Silent.

Business: Tons of empty strips, the old Babes establishment, Giant, the empty shops on Wisc Ave. She needs to work to reform business laws in the District to attarct more business instead of being concerned with bag taxes.

Taxes: She was part of the Council that spent and spent and then turned around and voted to raise taxes. She basically stuck it to her own ward.

What else?

CM Cheh has a meeting at 7:30 this evening at St. Mary's Church on Fessenden to discuss recent crime in Ward 3. MPD officials will be attending.

What would have been your proposal for Hardy and Deal? My understanding is that those are the two best schools, improved during her time, and the criticism that Jeff et al have leveled is that she was grabbing for too much when other wards need schools too.

So what is the alternative for Ward 3 if not building? Send kids to some school in another ward? Is that what you wanted?

From my perspective Cheh is pretty pro-development, very enamored of so-called "smart growth" concepts, but is more hostile to institutional growth. From nearby residents' perspectives, she was a big backer of a proposed private condo project that would have taken land from the Janney School playground, until pressure from the Janney community (and some DC government irregularities in the RFP process) forced her to back off. She's been a big backer of the Cathedral Commons project in Ward 3, to the point that neighbors feel she has ignored their concerns about induced traffic and not enough off-street parking at the project. Yet at the same time, she's been a tiger in opposing plans for the new AU law school at Tenley Circle, arguing that there's not enough off-street parking (although the project is right at the Tenley Metro). It's hard to reconcile her positions, except that she's apparently more favorably disposed to private development than institutional (or as a GW law professor, she doesn't mind beating up on rival AU!). One thing about Cheh is that once she makes her mind up, she doesn't like to listen to contrary opinions (the Janney school situation being a notable exeption). She can also be testy when questioned by constituents; again, as a law professor, she's probably too used to being the one asking the questions.

Yes. I know McLean Gardens, and it's lovely. But I guess he decided it was time to move on -- and he picked a great place to move to.

Cheh is very arrogant and, IMO, not as smart as she thinks. Also (and I say this as a liberal Democrat), her Mary-knows-best style of nannyism can be grating. Having said all that, I think she would be a good replacement for E.H. Norton who has stayed -- ineffectively -- in Congress for far too long.

CM Cheh at least has grounded her broomstick today!
