| Does anyone have any experience with Camp Greenway at Madeira School in Virginia? Thinking about sending my daughter who will be 10 this summer. It seems to offer plenty of activities that she would like. I am most interested to know if the camp has a friendly feel to it. Looking for nice kids, friendly well trained counselors, and an organized program. It has been in existence for 38 years so I am leaning toward it is a good program, but I would love to hear from other families who have personal experience with the camp. |
| We love love love Camp Greenway. We know lots of counselors and most are awesome. One thing is that it is big -- a section may have as many as 25 kids per activity. So that's not a lot of tennis, for example, in 40 minutes. But my kids never complained about it. Also the carpool line is obscenely long and parents begin lining up 40 minutes before the camp is out. But if you buy the bus service, you can avoid the carpool line. |
| DD went when she was 11 and loved it. I think they had a bus pick up in DC. |
| My DD was a counselor there and loved it. She wishes she'd been there as a camper. From what I could see it was extremely well organized and the kids love it. There are group counselors and there are also special instructors for all the activities. |

Our daughter loves Camp Greenway and our son can't wait to go based on everything she's told him about it. Many of the counselors were once campers there themselves, which says a lot to me about how much they must have enjoyed it and want to pass those same memories on to other kids.
I have a feeling we'll have the kids there until they're old enough to want to be counselors themselves. Another plus -- they serve lunch there, so at least for a short while, I'm spared making lunches every night. |
| My kids have been going there for 9 years and my oldest will be a CIT this year. They wait all year to go to Greeway. The cameraderie they get at this camp is unparallelled, as is the experiences and friendships. |

I will start with the fact that I am a 12 year employee of the Madeira School but do not directly work for Camp Greenway. Both my boys and my neighbours daughter have been going to camp for the past 6 years. They absolutely adore it. In fact my oldest and my neighbour's daughter have been through the CIT program and will be a paid counselor this year. My 10 year old keeps asking when camp is going to start! The management of the camp has been the same group of individuals for years and they are excellent at what they do. Also many of the counselors are older Madeira students and recent graduates who have a vested interest in the camp and the community. The care that the children receive is amazing and the friendships that the kids make with each other carry on throughout the entire year. I can not emphasize enough what a positive influence Camp Greenway has been on my children.
Best thing is that after a day at camp they are in bed early and sleep very soundly! |
