Pediatric dentist recommendation in NW (besides Dana Greenwald...) - FEEDBACK PLEASE!

Anonymous
Posted yesterday, I tried to go to Dr. Greenwald, but she is not accepting new patients. Both of her referrals were in Potomac.

Does anyone have a pediatric dentist in NW DC (or Bethesda at the farthest) who they recommend highly? Looking especially for great chairside manner with young children - since my dc is 3 and has visible cavities that will need to be addressed.

Thanks so much!!!

Dr. Perez (sorry, don't recall his first name) in Chevy Chase is very competent and kind. We saw him once for a dental emergency, although he is not our regular dentist (Dr. Greenwald is, LOL). The one negative (in my mind) about Dr. Perez is that he doesn't like the parent to go back with the child during the cleaning/checkup; he wants the child to go alone, even three-year-olds. That was a deal-breaker for us, but for those with more independent children it might not be an issue.

we just went to Dr. Perez at Metropolitan Pediatric Dentistry just above Friendship Heights and thought very highly of it. DS was complaining of mouth pain and they got us in immediately even as new patient on a Monday morning. Turned out to be Hand,Foot, Mouth and not a cavity. Dr. Perez was really great and the staff was excellent. Fast, friendly and nice clean kid friendly environment. Also saw lots of toddlers to tweens in the waiting room and got the feeling they were longtime clients who loved the office.

dr. perez. another vote. i thought my son would have a fit at the first visit when the hygienist took his hand and waved goodbye, but at 3 he was ok. he seems to feel kind of proud heading back on his own. we've now been a few times. front office staff excellent. my son sees the same hygienist every time which is really nice for him. dr. perez seems great. since i'm out in the waiting area, i don't really know exactly what goes on, but we're happy with the practice.

OP here.

Thanks all - there seems to be a consensus (!), so I'll give them a call.

We just had a great experience with Dr. Alan Kuwabara in Friendship Heights. There's lots of positive reviews in the archives if you do a search. I would highly recommend him.

Thanks - can you tell me more about your experience with Dr. Kuwabara?

Are you willing to travel a bit further to Bethesda? We see Dr. Danny Bui. He's not a pediatric dentist per se but sees lots of kids and has a great manner with them. Parking is easy across the street in the town lot. We found him on a previous thread last month.

Here's the previous poster's recommendations:

I took DS at 2 1/2 to Dr. Danny Bui in Bethesda. Will be taking him back this summer for his first cleaning. Dr. Bui is not a pediatric dentist specifically but he's very gentle, great with kids, and has plenty of things for them to do in the waiting room. He's also a bit on the holistic side. My DS liked him very much.

We see Dr. Broring, with offices in Bethesda and NW DC (near AU, I think). We've only been there twice but he's great with my son, now almost 3. Great chair-side manner, nice staff.

In response to Dr. Kuwabara:

We arrived and were the only ones in the waiting area (early am appointment), filled out our paperwork and were immediately brought in. His office space is very warm and inviting - it has a "fish" them with murals everywhere. We went into a big open room (not a small sterile office) that had ottomans all around and a dental chair sort of in the middle of the large space. He told me to sit wherever I was most comfortable and to get as close to my 3 yo son as I wanted.

We spoke for about 10 minutes about diet and brushing habits and thumb sucking (DS's habit) etc. He was informative but not preechy and totally understanding of the challenges of kids and tooth care. Then we started DS's exam -- he explained everything to him and let him touch all the equipment in advance. He had lots of flavors of toothpaste and flouride treatments. Sunglasses to protect his eyes from the bright light. He was very friendly and funny and put us both at ease. My son never fussed or objected at all (although he is generally a good patient).

A couple of days later we got a signed thank you letter from him. A very personal touch.

Hope that helps. If you have any specific questions, let me know.

OP here. Thanks a lot. That helps. I was a little turned off by Dr. Perez' website because he talks about how all children can be "cavity-free" - well, my dd has lots of cavities and we have brushed her teeth twice a day since they came in, so I think genetics has a little to do with it too. Anyway, it made me feel defensive and I'm already a little stressed about it. The above sounds more like our style. Thanks again.

We had a similar experience as 16:01 with Kuwabara. He's a winner.
