IVF costs at Shady Grove

Anonymous
We are looking at starting IVF (have already had 3 failed IUI's so I think this may be the next step). Our insurance doesn't cover anything and we are at shady grove. Has anyone recently done the multi cycle discount at Shady Grove? We can probably swing one round of IVF - having to pay full price for 2 rounds full price would be hard so we are looking at financing and multi cycle discount options.

Yes, we did it. It worked well for us because round 1 didn't work, so we got the 2nd round for half the price.

The things to know are that they will make you go through all the frozen transfers before moving on to the 2nd round, but this isn't the worst thing in the world because SG only freezes blastocysts. So depending on how you respond, you may not get many blasts or any at all, so you'd move right to round 2 if the first didn't work.

I did the Shared Risk program in 2009 after three failed IUIs. I borrowed $25,000 to cover the IVF + ICSI shared risk program, and to have a few thousand $ left over for medication.

In the end, I "lost" money. I got a BFP on the first cycle, but had a miscarriage. As the PP said, they require you to transfer all frozen blasts before moving onto another fresh cycle, so my 2nd cycle was a FET with the single blast that I had left -- and it worked! If I'd paid a la carte, it would have cost me about $17,000 for the fresh cycle with ICSI, freezing, and FET instead of $22,000 for the Shared Risk. I technically lost $5K on the deal.

That said, it was STILL entirely worth it to me. The miscarriage was stressful, but would have been more stressful if it was costing me over $10,000. Going into the FET with only a single blast to transfer, I still wasn't overly stressed because the FET cycle is relatively easy, and I knew that I'd just go into another fresh cycle right away if it failed. So I think it was worth it.

If you get a lot of eggs at the first retrieval, though, it might not be worth it because you could afford to do a FET or two before it would add up to the Shared Risk costs.

It's a tough decision to make, and depends a lot on your diagnosis and issues.

PP We weren't so lucky I'd recommend going to CFA, GW, or DF before wasting money on SG.

To PP, Dominion will just push them into Natural Cycle. They could do 3 or 4 of those and still end up with nothing as the odds aren't as good.

I';d look into shared risk if you qualify. GL!!!

We did the multi cycle discount. Both failed so now we're shelling out for shared risk. If I had to do it over I would have just done shared risk and not have to have worried about what if it didn't work. And for what it's worth- our chances were 60% before we started so you never know what's going to happen once you get in.

My husband and I just entered the Shared Risk Program and SG and are on our way to egg retrieval. While it is a lot of money, I have to say that it has been liberating for us. No more worrying about how many IVF attempts we'll need, what the insurance company will cover and when, etc. We both feel so much more relaxed about the whole process. Good luck to you in your decision! It's so personal, so you really have to weigh the costs and benefits of going with insurance or exploring the various cycle discount programs.

I did Shared Risk at SG. I got lucky and was successful on the first try, but I still think it was the best choice for me. It gave me peace of mind that if it didn't work the first time, or I miscarried (as I'd done before after an IUI) there was still hope. Honestly I can't imagine having survived the cycle if I'd had to worry about costs on top of everything else.

I'm not sure if there are different prices, but ours was about $22k back in 2014, without medication. This gave us 6 attempts at IVF and a refund if we did not have a baby.

Yes, I'm doing shared risk at SG right now -- price is $22,500 without meds.

Hi I am currently looking into the shared risk at SG and am I correct in that the 22,500 includes all cost aside from the meds which could run 5000-8000?

I just met with the Dr at SG as we have been through 3 failed IUIs and seem to be onto IVF. With the Shared program at SG, it is everything is covered in the $22500 aside from the meds?
