It's bizarre to support 800,000 DACA recipients and 3.6 million DREAMers who had no choice in the matter when they immigrated here and would be sent back to a country they very well might have no memory of or support system in?

Though I suppose you wouldn't be a Republican if basic human decency wasn't "bizarre" to you...

Yes. It is bizarre to put 800k illegals or 3.6m illegals which is what they are regardless of how or why they came ahead of 850k US CITIZENS who work for the government. The GOP is handling the messaging really well here - this will blow up in Dems faces even if they get their shutdown.

As one of those 850K US CITIZENS, I will gladly forego my paycheck for however long it takes so that millions of innocent people can have a better life.

What's it like living without a soul?

Not to mention industries that are hurt by government shutdowns. Stop acting likes its a free vacation - its stressful, allows work to pile up, and places severe limits on agencies that do things like counterterrorism. Industries are affected, commercial operations are affected, and effects are felt most in the DC area, but are also felt all over the country.

I agree we need a solution for the Dreamers, but we can't hurt the economy and millions of families just for them.

I agree. My heart goes out to all the contractors, like our legal immigrant office cleaners who are contractors, who will likely be going without a paycheck and struggling to pay for basic necessities. Not to mention all the small businesses who will be unfairly impacted.

Good for you?

I will not gladly forego my paycheck. I have a family to support and don't appreciate my livelihood being used as a political football. So, bravo, PP, that you are privileged enough to afford to take a principled stand, but I can't. I am furious.

+10000. For every one illegal they are multiple LEGAL immigrants who are going to be furloughed by contractors — ie no chance of back pay. Every thing from office cleaning services to IT guys. Downtown restaurants/coffee shops are already talking to their employees about fewer shifts for the duration of any shut down. I assume same will happen in Nova and MD as people who aren’t getting paid will be eating out less. So those people don’t matter, just illegals - dreaming or not?

Me too. And it’s not even about needing the $$$. Not voting Dem again if they indeed put illegals ahead of US citizen govt employees. Help people out if you can but get your own priorities straight - citizens aren’t disposable.

I think you meant "people aren't disposable".

Why are the Republicans attaching immigration to the spending bill? They could decouple them and vote on immigration later.

Republicans have done this. Democrats are refusing to support the CR unless there is a deal for dreamers.

As are some republican senators, lets tell all the facts here

Schumer said he'd pass a CR. This is R's fault. And let's be real this is Trump's fault specifically. They had an immigration deal last week and he scuttled it, and then they had the beginnings of a CHIP deal and he scuttled that too. It's ridiculous.

Its not for them - its to tell the R's to grow up and come to the table, bang out a long term budget - stop cowtowing to the right wing extremists in your own party and f'ing govern.

But now it is also the Ds cowtowing to the furthest left wing of the party, particularly as you have lots of senators considering bids in 2020 and wanting to shore up their left flank for the primaries.

I support an idea floated by my @SenateGOP colleagues: pass a clean CR for a few days to give us a hard, final deadline & keep both sides at the table. We’ll reach a deal that fully funds our military & the opioid fight, CHIP, vets, pensions, disaster aid & protects Dreamers.
