Can anyone recommend their interior decorator?
And, if you don't mind telling me... how much you spent and what you had done? I'm looking for someone who can design, furniture shop, etc. for a single large room. I've never done this before, and I don't want to call someone who's design fee is going to exceed my entire budget! |
| BBW OP. They are expensive, and you rarely get anything for your money. Suggest: get a magazine with a room done the way you like it, and copy it. |
|
Noooooooooooooo!!!!! Please say it isn't so!
I'm totally inept, and I wouldn't know how to even begin trying to create a room from a magazine picture. There MUST be someone out there who doesn't cost a fortune and can just give me some good advice???? |
| Stephanie Kipnis- 301-257-4163, she did my entire house! tell her I sent you (Amy), she'll discount you. |
Can you give an idea of how much this cost you? Both in terms of fees and then what you spent on furnishings? |
|
Honestly, get many magazines. Look around, make mental notes of what you like.
In my experience, interior designers are a little flaky and very expensive. That said, OP, I completely understand your reluctance/fear of pulling an entire room together. Even so, do it yourself. |
| Herland Baker from Colony house Furniture (Arlington)-you don't have to pay a fee per say just have to buy the furniture from there. He is very cool and nice and also has the correct credentials-interior design degree which a lot of these designers do not have. |
| OP, what kind of style are you looking for? If you're interested in modern decor, you can talk to the owners at Vastu or Apartment Zero in the District. Other stores will also be happy to make suggestions and can probably give you as much or as little help as you like. You can discuss your budget and what level of design help you're willing to pay for. |
| Denise Willard, Decor by Denise -- I think she charges about 150/hr, can't recall exactly. |

Melanie Whittington @Whittington Design Studio. 703-533-3705
I believe she charges 150/hr but not 100% sure. |
| sorry, I was the one that told u about Stephanie K, I was on vacation-she was inexpensive, I think like $50/hr, compared to 100-150. She'll give you a quote up front. Also if you give her a budget, she'll truly work within that. |
| The most inexpensive way and efficieny manner would be to go to Ethan Allen and have a Design Consultant design your rooms or house FOR FREE. They will come to your house and measure everything and design a plan. You could order the furniture you wanted and make changes as you see fit with the design consultant. I used Dennis Pollard Ph: 301.984.4360 Ext. 136 dpollard@rockville.ethanallen.com. Tell him Carnell send you. He's in the Rockville Ethan Allen store. |
I had a friend do this. They came to the house (which was newly purchased and the couple didn't really have much furniture) and told my friends how to lay out each room. My friends only bought a couple of chairs from EA and were really pleased with the service. |
