Newer baby items?

Anonymous
Someone very closet to me just got pregnant after trying for years. They have a 5yo DD and I'm wondering what has changed in the world of baby items that I could give as gifts? I'd like to put together a basket of stuff totaling $200 or so. Ideas? TIA

Invaluable items to me this go around were: Aden & Anais swaddle blankets (pack of 4 about $45); Maya Wrap Ring Sling (~$70); the bumbo seat w/tray (~$30); the Bobby (~$40). I plan on giving the blankets as a gift at any baby shower I attend from now on, I loved them that much. The sling, though I think it's the best invention ever created, is hit or miss, some people prefer a different type carrier.

Also nice was the Aden & Anais sleep sack ($40ish) and the Halo sleep sacks (~$25) to avoid blanket use. (Note, my two oldest are 23 and 18, and my baby, just 9 months....Everything was new & exciting to me! Geez, my oldest were put to bed on their bellies, used blankets from day 1, had thick bumpers around their cribs and were in front facing car seats as soon as they could sit up. It's a miracle they are alive!!)

Oh, I forgot, I also loved the Angel Care Monitor, but that's about $150ish by itself, I think.

Forget the Bumbo... Get get the AA blankets (I like the baboo better than muslin) a boppy and a bouncy seat. The carrier is very personal you can advise her to attend a baby wearin class to learn which one she likes better.

For the boppy I got also an extra sleeve and the waterproof liner. Much easier to wash those than washing the whole pillow.

This is a good list. I love the Bumbo seat and A&A blankets too. Only thing is the Bumbo had probably been around for 5 years so she may already have one.

Boppy has some usefulness beyond nursing, like propping babies who can't quite sit up, but for nursing all my friends have preferred the My Brest Friend pillow.

HATED MBF... Boppy was much easier to use and has more uses than just BF pillow.

Whatever you give her, OP just make sure you get a gift receipt so she can return whatever is not her taste.

Sorry...hit send when I meant preview:

  • Onesies (can not have enough...we go through 1-4 outfits per child per day)
  • Receiving blankets (same)
  • Bouncy seats
  • Bobby pillows
  • Gift cards to our registry (after the due date, we got to purchase anything left on the registry for 10% off, so gift cards go farther than buying off the registry
  • Sleep sheep (this has been INVALUABLE for helping them to sleep)
  • Bathtub with hammock (the hammock makes a huge difference, I'm not fighting to keep the squirmy baby's head out of the water)
  • Plush hoodie bath towels (there is a HUGE difference between the expensive plush ones and the cheap thin bath towels)
  • a big box of Newborn diapers (to get started, even though it wasn't the brand that we'll be using long-term, it was nice not to have to have those when we brought the boys back from the hospital)

  • Things not to get:

  • Bottles (each parent or baby may have a preference)
  • Pacifiers (people got us the orthodontic/Nuk type, but our kids won't use them, since those don't match the nipples on their bottles)
  • little baby shoes, mittens or caps (while nice ideas, some parents use these but many don't--we don't, our kids don't like them)
  • Crib blankets, bumpers, pillows, etc (many parents do not use them as they are recommended against due to SIDS--let the parents buy those if they want them)

  • That's what I can think of, off the top of my head. Good luck!

hated the My brest friend! I'm looking at my "pile o junk" wondering what to do with the thing, since it was only used a couple of times. Def a waste of money! Boppy was much better.

OP here - Thanks so much everyone! I am planning so far to do some Swaddle Mes (don't think she ever had them) and the Sleep Sheep (my DD loves it). I know she had the boppy, A&A blankets, bumbo, and the regular baby stuff that was around then (a lot of what was mentioned). I definitely want to get useful things, but really don't know what else is new in the past few years, since my DD is only 1. I appreciate all the suggestions!

I made this list of Baby Shower Gifts on our site which is made up of products that were all invented by a different moms (so you know they're useful!) and they all make great gifts for new moms because they're unique AND practical. Hope it helps!

NoseFrida (don't know how "new" it is though)

Just got the NoseFrida - by far the grossest thing I've ever loved. It is GREAT! Just don't think about it when doing it. Sure to get some laughs andb to be 1 of the most talked about gifts at a shower. BTW, really don't like the Boppy for nursing - awkward, doesn't fit tight against me, no pocket, hate that it doesn't stay on if I have to stand... might as well just use some pillows. Love the MBF!
