s/o on work/life balance thread-what full time jobs are just 40 hours a week?

Anonymous
I am expecting baby #2 (toddler is 2 years old) and I need to find a job that doesn't require more than 40 hours a week. I am not even sure where to begin to find this. Any recommendations on industries/companies that are known for this?

The Federal Government.

Nonprofits. Every job I've ever had has been 37.5 or 35 hours. And I'm paid fairly well with great benefits.

OP here. My father worked for the Federal government and worked 11-12 hour days and lots of weekends. He was SES but I never think of the federal gov't as being really 40 hour a week friendly.

LOL...it's true. More specifically, federal employee. Union dictates hours, breaks, hard to get fired, everything. Sweet deal!

OP, what is your line of work. My parents were both feds and generally worked 40 hr weeks. Although, my mom had a few jobs where she had to work more. It can be dependent upon your job assignment and agency.

Really?! All the people I knew were paid less than minimum wage with the overtime..

OP here again. I am in human resources but am not hung up in staying in that field (and in fact would like to try something new but am not sure what).

Well, I make $125k and my company puts 12% into my retirement plan.

And how is less than minimum wage legal?

i've always worked for non-profit/academia/higher ed, and i've never worked more than 40 hrs/wk. in higher ed, my job was 37.5. pay was decent, benefits were great, work environment was highly conducive to work/life balance.

I second higher Ed. Good luck!

My office is technically 37.5 hours per week to be full time. Most people work about 50 per week (not admin/support staff, but everyone who works on program activities). I work 80% part-time -- it is supposed to be 30 hours a week, but it ends up being more like 35-40.

I second non profits, particularly if you can do HR / Operations. There is a huge need there.

Clearly you are not in government.

Unions do not universally apply to all government workers. It's not that hard to get fired, actually, if there are good managers. We -my small agency- have fired at least 1/2 dozen people in the last few weeks.

Also, as to the hours, almost every agency is expected to do more with less (and yes, your services will suffer. Thank you Eric Cantor and crew) with the current budget situation. And, your expected to do it with pay freezes, less staff, higher insurance premiums/retirement contributions on the horizon and with the contempt of people like this poster. 8 hour work days do not exist in almost every position in my agency -save for one particular business unit. But, keep perpetuating this myth. Because it is just that.

Agree! As I sit here still on my blackberry after working 10.5 hours today, then coming home and having my blackberry ring while I was trying to help my child with homework, I long for that elusive 40 hour per week government job!!!
