Non Perishable Foods For Kids

Anonymous
Obviously, you know where this is going-we may not have power for the next several days. Besides keeping a cooler with ice on hand for milk, etc. give me your ideas for non-perishable foods-I've got two three year olds and while I'm not crazy, I'd like to keep things on the healthy side if possible. I've thought of some myself-nuts, dried fruit, crackers but I know you guys will have some good ideas. I'm particularly concerned about proteins. We do not have gas and cannot heat anything.

Bread for sandwiches. Crusty bread for dipping in olive oil. Peanut butter or whatever equivalent works for you. Fruit. Pepperoni on crackers. Tunafish. Summer sausage/chorizo/other hard unrefrigerated sausage. Polenta. Cereal. Pretzels. I'd be willing to keep a hunk of hard cheese on the counter for a day, but that's just me.

My DD loves the Amy's canned soups and would eat them room temperature. Don't know if your kids would. . .

Also nut bars, canned chicken on crackers - mix with some olive oil, dried dill, cumin, salt and pepper - YUM!

For future emergencies -- I recommend you buy a few cans of Heat Cell (hotter than Sterno if you follow the directions and remove both rings) and a small metal stove so you can put a pot on top of it.

Or buy a $25 camping stove and a can or propane.

If you have an electric stove, you shoudl always have a quick way to boil some water or heat some soup if you need it.] but the power goes out!

Thanks again for all the good ideas-the power is back but I'm keeping all this in mind for the future.
