Obviously, you know where this is going-we may not have power for the next several days. Besides keeping a cooler with ice on hand for milk, etc. give me your ideas for non-perishable foods-I've got two three year olds and while I'm not crazy, I'd like to keep things on the healthy side if possible. I've thought of some myself-nuts, dried fruit, crackers but I know you guys will have some good ideas. I'm particularly concerned about proteins. We do not have gas and cannot heat anything. |
Bread for sandwiches. Crusty bread for dipping in olive oil. Peanut butter or whatever equivalent works for you. Fruit. Pepperoni on crackers. Tunafish. Summer sausage/chorizo/other hard unrefrigerated sausage. Polenta. Cereal. Pretzels. I'd be willing to keep a hunk of hard cheese on the counter for a day, but that's just me. |
My DD loves the Amy's canned soups and would eat them room temperature. Don't know if your kids would. . .
Also nut bars, canned chicken on crackers - mix with some olive oil, dried dill, cumin, salt and pepper - YUM! |
For future emergencies -- I recommend you buy a few cans of Heat Cell (hotter than Sterno if you follow the directions and remove both rings) and a small metal stove so you can put a pot on top of it.
http://beprepared.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_CK%20S170_A_name_E_Flat-Fold+Stove+Combo Or buy a $25 camping stove and a can or propane. If you have an electric stove, you shoudl always have a quick way to boil some water or heat some soup if you need it.] but the power goes out! |
Thanks again for all the good ideas-the power is back but I'm keeping all this in mind for the future. |
Move to an area not served by Pepco. |
