22 weeks - terrible middle back pain at night - what worked for you?

Anonymous
For about a week now, I am unable to sleep past 3am b/c I wake up with terrible middle/upper back pain. I was a stomach sleeper pre-pregnancy, and when I try to sleep on my side, I guess my torso twists and leans against the bed. I tried using two regular pillows - one between my legs, and one against my belly/chest, but no relief. Should I invest into a snoogle or other type of a pregnancy pillow? What worked for you? I am on a smaller size (5.2 ft. and small-framed). This pain has only come at night so far - too bad I can't sleep standing up!

Yes, I experienced the same thing, starting around 20 weeks (although mine developed into much worse mid-upper back problems that involved ribs out of place), and I'm the same size as you (not sure if that makes an difference though for back pain!) I too tried two pillows, which did nothing. The Snoogle was a HUGE lifesaver; I would definitely recommend investing in one of these. One of my best pregnancy purchases.

I also started having a lot of back pain at night around 23 weeks (mine is my lower back though) and I also love my snoogle. THat, combined with a few other strategically placed other pilllows (its a good thing we have a king size bed or I dont think DH would fit around them all) has provided some releif. I was also a stomach sleeper and its been a difficult transition!

Same here...I have a small frame too (same height) so ordered the mini-Snoggle. Also, we only have a queen and our bed is already getting crowded from my multiple pillows. I'll post here once I try it out tomorrow.

OP, here, thanks for your response. Yes, please post how the mini-snoogle worked for you (we also have a queen bed!). And if you loved it, could you please post a link to it, too? Thank you!

any manner of full body pillow is a lifesaver. By 30 weeks I needed a chiropractor. That's what really made me feel as close to not-pregnant as possible.

I had the same thing. Try stretching before bed for a good amount of time. Doing pelvic tilts and cat cow helped a lot. Then get DH to give you nightly back rubs.

Wow, I'm having the exact same thing at 26 weeks (and I'm also a former stomach sleeper). Thought it was just me. I can't figure out what I'm doing to cause it.

I'm at 22 weeks and similar in size to you. I got the Sealy Sweet Pea http://www.amazon.com/Sealy-Maternity-Nursing-Pillow-Cappuccino/dp/B00499DRZI kind of like the mini-snoogle, except smaller I think. I like it and find that it does help, but I still switch between sides often and sometimes if it is a bad night, kick it out of bed. It has great support between the legs, much better than a regular pillow and it narrows up towards your belly and has a thin "shelf" you can put under your belly for support. I find I'm not really big enough for that shelf to help just yet though. I have also used it as back support and turned it around so it goes between my knees, but the shelf goes under my back instead of my belly and I can lean back on the pillow. I got mine at BBB with the coupon, so it wasn't too expensive.

When I'm having a really bad night, I go down to the couch and find it amazingly more comfortable than my bed. I don't know why. Good luck!

Snoogle (or something similar--I promised myself to splurge on one this time around!) and back rubs. Even if it's the middle of the night, get DS to rub it out. Seriously, amazingly helpful.

hee. Get D*H* to rub it out.

The snoogle was hugely helpful for me too. Also, if the pain is too bad, get up and apply a heating pad for a few minutes to ease the pain. I have had back pain since about week 18 and it is miserable!

Snoogle fan here. We only have a full size bed and it was fine with the snoogle - didn't get the mini. It does take up space, but it's very comfortable and flexible. And now that my DD is here it makes a really comfortable nursing pillow, so it's continued to be useful.

Good call -- I was one of the first few posters who mentioned my terrible middle back pain. I had to end up seeing a chiropractor (after trying massage and accupuncture) and they actually recommended ice first, then heating pad. If there is something swollen in your back (as was my case), the heat will only make the swelling worse. But it feels great!
