pronouncing the g in "ing"

THis drives me crazy. There is someone in my workplace who does this. Why? is it a speech impediment or just bad pronounciation? HIs speech and grammar are otherwise fine.

I believe that's from having an accent.

Yes! My DH from Georgia does this, and doesn't believe me when I tell him it's normal to NOT pronounce the hard 'g'. If someone could find a link for me showing that it's wrong, I'd love it.

Having said that though, I love hearing him say the hard g. It's just how he speaks, and he has great grammar.

This person is from the USA and grew up in a place without a particular accent. ...and has no accent. parents are both professional. went to a selective college so not stupid...

drives me crazy. I was hoping someone would say they can't help it...like they are color blind for the fact that almost nobody else says the g in ing...

I just consider it conversational english versus formal english. As long as it is used in the right setting, it doesn't both me.

Fascinating. Two years ago we paid $1,000+ out of pocket to a speech pathologist who worked with DS on articulation deficiencies.

Guess what one of the sound combos was? Uh huh, the ending /g/ in /-ing/ words. Because that's proper standard English.

For the person talkinG about hicks .... it's actually 'hick' to drop the /g/ in /-ing/ .... I'm a fixin' to git goin' in the mornin' . See?

You know....there is a difference between a "hick" and someone who simply has a southern accent. I would rather listen to the soft sound of a southern accent all day long then have to listen to five minutes of that horrid Yankee accent.

I agree. I don't say I am goin' somewhere but nor would anyone focus on the way I say "ing".

Wow just wow. People in the UK, Canada, and other Englisg speaking countries pronounce the g... Get out much, op? The also pronounce their t's... Americans like to say budder and wader, but to the rest of the world it's water and butter.
