Private & Independent Schools
| We just enrolled our children into the lower school at Flint Hill School. We are curious what other parents think about the school- competitive enough? good teachers? college placement, etc... The tuition matches the "top tier" metropolitan schools but it doesn't get mentioned on this site.... Thoughts? |
Just enrolled? When were you accepted? For what grades? |
| What are exmissions like? That should clue you in. |
| A friend's child goes to Flint Hill (Upper School). The mother is very pleased with a "learning center" at the school that helps those kids who need a bit of help with organization, study skills, etc. She thinks her child's study habits have dramatically improved. I don't know about exmissions. |
Flint Hill is to VA as Norwood is to MD. Check out the Norwood threads. That is generally a good thing. But it is most definitely not in the same league as the "top tier" schools that are obsessed about on this site. |
| Many of my father's partners' children went to Flint Hill late 70s to early 90s. We are all adults now and the results were not impressive. There are other private schools in that area that may produce better results for you. |
Interesting. What "results" were "not impressive"? |
| I believe that Flint Hill School occupies to old campus of Flint Hill Academy and that the school underwent significnat changes in the late 80's or early 90's. So I would judge the current instituion based on long history |
Same league of competition to gain adminission? Beyond that, anything tremendously different from the "top tier?" |
Cannot speak to Flint Hill. But as for Norwood, nothing in my view tremendously different from the "top tier." It's the fact that 1) most of the families had Norwood as a safety school; 2) it's pretty far out in Suburbia, that has contributed to a perception that it's not top tier. The facilities and resources are all top tier, the kids all seem pretty bright, and the families not unlike those you would find at the Big Three. |

Never even heard of Flint Hill. Looked it up and it seems way out there.
How does it compare with Potomac School (which I'd have thought was more the equivalent of Norwood for Virginia)? |
| Flint Hill is an excellent school. Academics are top notch, graduates attend premiere college institutions. Not as snotty as Potomac School. Will definitely send my daughter to FHS. |

I saw a small number of students going to Northern Virgina Community College on the exmissions list. Wow!
I agree that Flint Hill is not a "top tier" school. Probably strong, but not top tier. |
| Here's an interesting tidbit/rumor: I have heard that if you have an "A" average for two years at Northern Virginia Community College, you are AUTOMATICALLY admitted to the University of Virginia or William and Mary for your last two years. Can someone tell me if this is true? |

Regarding exmissions, I offer two thoughts. The "big 3" schools are careful to ask parents of applicants where they went to school, as it is well known that legacies have a slightly easier time getting admitted to the Ivies. Thus, a school can increase the numbers of their graduates admitted at top universities by admitting students more likely to be admitted regardless of the caliber of teaching they then receive. All the elites are fine schools, but don't let exmissions sway you too much.
Secondly, getting admitted to a top university is not the only reason to send a child to private school. Being well prepared for university (regardless of whether it is an Ivy or good state school) is also important. Some of us have children who will be more likely to thrive in a small class size and small school environment. The Fairfax and Montgomery publics are excellent, but they are also HUGE and not easily navigated by certain types of kids. So please don't assume that schools like Flint Hill are less wonderful only on the basis of their exmissions. Depending on your child ... it might be the perfect "fit"! |
