WAHM of 8 month old - WTF was I thinking?

Anonymous
I can't get any work done. He's either screaming to be let out of baby jail (the gigantic play yard I set up next to my desk), crawling around the house causing me to check on him every few seconds or banging on my keyboard because he wants to be held. His naps are about 2 minutes long (I rock him to sleep, lay him in the play pen and he pops up about 20 minutes later) and he's only taking 2 of them.

I'm about to lose my effing mind today.

This is a rant, and for that I'm sorry. But really, are there any WAHM's out there and if so, how did you make it work?

You don't. You still have to have childcare. It is not possible to care for a child and work.

If you are working for a company, most of them have policies dictating if you work at home and have children, you must have childcare.

Yes. I love working at home. Because I have a nanny. Get childcare. You aren't being fair to your son or your boss, colleagues, clients, customers, etc.

My company will only let us WAH if we have childcare. I thought this was a dumb policy until I had a child. Now I totally get it. Good luck!

OP, it's only going to get worse. I'm a SAHM of a 17 mo old. At 8 mo I could still go to the bathroom by myself, run down to throw in a load of laundry, etc. That is all a faint memory now. I think you and your DS will both be happier if you find some sort of childcare arrangement.

did you really think you could work from home without childcare?

Me too. Part of the problem is that it's actually fairly easy to work at home with a newborn - they're asleep so much it was easy to get a few things done between wake-ups. Then they get a little older and...yeah, not so much. Rules like these make so much more sense to me now.

Yes, because before I had kids, I had no idea what the experience was going to be like. Unlike you, clearly.

I work at home but my DD is in daycare PT and my mom watches her for the remainder of the time. Actually find that as much as I love it when DD is home in my mom's care that I get much more work done when DD is at daycare. I'm considering putting DD in daycare full time in the new year. In any case, it would be impossible to be productive without childcare. Being a WAHM does not mean watching your kids while you work.

OP here. LOL, so I may not have responded exactly this way, but, yes, I did naively think it was possible. I thought that was the great thing about WAH ~ but I am now realizing how wrong I was!!

Thank you all for the responses. It appears I'm going to have to get some help. Or leave my job. Any other options, opinions, etc. would be most appreciated!!

Not the pp, but you thought you could sit there uninterrupted for 8 hours while you were supposed to be working. Kids or not, I think most know that a baby, infant, toddler needs attention unless they are napping to which you still need to monitor them. Dont act snarky OP, you posted this thread and all the replies have told you that you need childcare.

The only time I even TRY to get work done when my daughter's around is when she's too sick for daycare and I absolutely have stuff that has to get done. And then I pretty much park her in front of the TV and hope for a long nap. Working at home without childcare just doesn't work, as the other PP's have said. Not sure why you thought it would. (and frankly, your kid deserves the stimulation and care of someone who is actually caring for them, even if it is "a stranger.")

Sorry I responded to someone I thought was OP. Sorry OP the snarky response of the pp was not you!

OP didn't post that comment. You failed to read the string. Besides that, a lot of new mommies don't even know, what they don't know.

I'd be pissed if an employee claimed to be 'working from home' and didn't have childcare. Nanny?
