Food Intolerance/Allergy in ebf baby?

Anonymous
If your EBF infant had an intolerance or allergy what were the signs and how soon after giving up the food did you notice a difference, especially if it was dairy? My EBF 2mo DD essentially projectile vomits a huge volume at least once a day. FWIW, it does not seem to bother her much and she is gaining weight very well. I finally decided I might as well try giving up dairy just to see if it would help. I have been dairy free for five days and have seen no difference. I know it can take up to two weeks to get milk protein out of your system but even so, wouldn't I notice at least some improvement after several days? TIA

I think food intolerance issues with newborns have to do more with rashes, irritability, bowel movements, etc. That sounds more like reflux to me and probably has very little to do with what you're eating. When my friend's baby had a milk intolerance issue, she had blood in her stool, a horrible diaper rash, and was miserable.

Actually, in many, many babies, the reflux is caused by allergies or intolerances. It can take up to 2 weeks to see any difference after giving up dairy. And it may, or may not work at all. For my first kid, after I gave up almost everything in my diet and nothing changed, I went to elemental formula. It wasn't until I started introducing solids that i realized that the culprit was oats, which I was eating tons of to boost my bm supply.

It could be a food allergy (are you eating a ton of something or eating the same thing daily?). My third is now 3.5 months old and I think she has a milk issue ... She was screaming, pooping green mucous poo starting week 2. I gave up dairy and it took about two weeks and she did a 180. I am very careful about not eating the same foods every day ,,, my 2nd is allergic to peanut, almond, and sesame (all things I ate daily when bffing her). I exclusively breastfed my first and second and plan to do the same with the third. Try to stick with breastfeeding. The first few weeks are the toughest. When the baby is about 4 months you can take him to a pediatric allergist for a blood draw to see what he's allergic to. We go to Theodore Kim in Chantilly - he's great!! Good luck!!!

DC has a dairy/soy allergy. Symptoms were severe fussiness/crying during and after feeding, eczema on face (which ped said was "baby acne", but went away after diet change), very gassy, blood in the stool, and poor sleeping. Dairy may take 2 weeks or a little longer to get out of your system, but then it also has to get out of your DC's system. Our DC was so sensitive to dairy and other things that we switched to an amino-acid formula.

PP again. DC spit up A LOT (no projectile though) and was gaining weight (albeit slowly), which totally threw our ped off in regard to the allergy. Ped said many infants with allergies have eczema all over and/or are failure to thrive. Our DC had neither, but the difference after switching to the amino-acid formula was night and day.

it took my avoiding soy and dairy for 3 weeks to see a difference. i used rice milk. good luck!
with my changed diet I was able to avoid giving my baby any meds. by the time he was 15 months he was able to drink soy and cows milk without a problem.

my baby def had a dairy intolerance, she spit up CONSTANTLY and had bouts where she seemed really uncomfortable. We had a nephew with reflux, so we could tell that it wasn't quite THAT bad, but it was pretty bad. To jump start the process I cut dairy, soy, wheat, egg whites, peanuts, tree nuts, seafood, and something else... can't remember now... all at once, and added them back one by one, after 2 weeks or so of full-on restriction. It took a couple weeks, I think, but the difference was gradual and clear. After a couple months I tried to reintroduce dairy (everything else was back in) and she turned into holy exorcist baby. Took it back out, and she went back to fine.

6 mos later and I am just adding small amounts of cheese and yogurt. Her problem now seems to e limited to real milk products, ie not processed like cheese or yogurnt. So give it a try every few monts, to see if baby has outgrown it.
