There's no federal aid for college? |

How old are you? What rock are you living under because you are totally out of touch with reality. |
Not the poster you are quoting, but do you think federal aid pays for college? don't want to derail this thread but seriously if you haven't heard about the student debt crisis and rising costs then you might want to educate yourself before making such a bullshit statement that makes you sounds like an ignorant ass |
Let's take it one step further. Graduate from college and then actually get jobs. |
Also: http://www.gphistorical.org/mlk/mlkspeech/ It's a good speech. But it is not enough for me to stand before you tonight and condemn riots. It would be morally irresponsible for me to do that without, at the same time, condemning the contingent, intolerable conditions that exist in our society. These conditions are the things that cause individuals to feel that they have no other alternative than to engage in violent rebellions to get attention. And I must say tonight that a riot is the language of the unheard. And what is it America has failed to hear? It has failed to hear that the plight of the negro poor has worsened over the last twelve or fifteen years. It has failed to hear that the promises of freedom and justice have not been met. And it has failed to hear that large segments of white society are more concerned about tranquility and the status quo than about justice and humanity. |
When you bold an entire passage for emphasis you demonstrate that you are an idiot. Especially if you also use emoticons. |
I think those are two different posters. The first PP bolded the passage and the second PP used an emoticon. |
Just a quick scan through some of these threads and a pattern is apparent- constant belittling, reference to posters as "stupid" and "idiot." DCUM is a microcosm of every bring that is wrong with this country. Find me a conversation that has remained civil throughout and hasn't denigrated to name calling! |

You do know that Mike Brown's family is not organizing and leading the protests, right? He is supporting the family on a personl level, not serving as the leader of any protest |

TBH, this is has been an eye-opening discussion for me.
There are SOME White people in this country who believe what they believe and they stick to 40 year old narratives as the basis for that belief. Couple examples: People have been saying for 2 days that there is a grassroots energy out there that is fueled by young, educated minorities and White Liberals. At least one White person here said there was no movement - that the Ferguson protest was just opportunistic thugs. Lo and behold, that very night there were mostly peaceful protests throughout the country made up of DIVERSE protestors, including thousands of people here in DC. That's one. Then poeople have been saying that the old head "leaders," namely Jesse and Sharpton are not leading this grassroots energy. Yet we get "we see them on TV and at press conferences, they must be the leaders." That is the very point. The White media is keeping these guys prominent because they ARE willing to preen before the cameras. I remember the old saying "the revolution will not be televised." Means that the movement is not being driven by the "pundits" you see on TV. It is the people out in the streets and on the ground - something Jesse and Al have not done for years. They do not hold much sway with the youngsters. Which is what someone else tried to say 2 days ago. Then of course, folks trot out MLK ignoring that he was murdered by a White man, he was VERY pointed in his criticisms about how the poor were being treated and that, late in his life, he was beginning to wonder whether a movement of passive resistance had run its course. MLK might not approve of the "rioting" but he would certainly approve of the peaceful protests and he would certainly disapprove of the SES disparities in this country. Honestly, some of you need to get off your high horses and, if you can manage it, have an open mind about what more plugged in folks are trying to tell you. |
