McLean vs. Arlington Schools

makes sense

It doesn't make sense to put AAP centers in two schools next to one another, and it won't happen. It's more likely that FCPS will continue to monitor the enrollment at Haycock and, if necessary, move some or all of the Franklin Sherman AAP kids to Churchill Road.

I live on the school island that is Rosslyn. We are in the Key,Williamsburg, Yorktown boundary. Do any of you know how the boundary change is going to affect us? FWIW, I don't care if the changes put us at Wakefield, W-L. I'm just curious as of the likely hood that will happen.

The principal's email this morning also said thatnHaycock AAP is closed to new students this year. New students this year will go to Churchill Road. I think this might be the beginning of a plan to send Franklin Sherman kids to Churchill Road.

No one knows anything right now but boundary islands are usually not an ideal solution. In the 90s that neighborhood was in the Swanson/W-L zone.

It does make sense when the clusters are different. Longfellow/McLean students should be grouped together. Kilmer/Marshall too. If the Tysons population growth happens, they will need to do this anyway.

Half of the kids at Lemon Road go to Longellow and McLean.

To the Rosslyn poster, I would imagine that you'd end up at Washington-Lee because you are a lot closer to W-L than to Wakefield. I would think that the pockets of South Arlington feeding into W-L (like the pocket of townhomes at Manchester & 50) would probably end up at Wakefield.

I always wondered how Rosslyn ended up in yorktown, given how far away it is from the school.

Okay. How soon will this change happen?. which middle school boundary will we be in, Swanson or TJ? I hope Swanson, I don't like the layout of TJ, too here and there.

There are no plans yet and probably not for a few years. Rosslyn was in the Swanson zone for decades.

monitor the enrollment? if necessary, move some? the school's been busting at the seems for more than 5 years there isn't really a question that something has to be done to reduce the overall enrollment

I can't imagine that APS will be moving anyone from Yorktown to W-L. Both are over capacity, but W-L is more so.

Another option would be to allow transfers to W-L for the IB program only if students did the IB program at TJ; that would shift some of the middle school population and made sure that IB transfers were genuinely interested in IB.

Maybe that might help prevent some IB transfers at W-L from quitting IB and switching to AP courses junior year. Not all the IB transfers do IB.

I don't think everyone agrees with that characterization. But the enrollment this year clearly is greater than FCPS projected, and if they think it will persist they will probably start by moving the AAP kids from Franklin Sherman to Churchill Road.

Haycock's principal sent an email yesterday on the overcrowding. In it she said, ultimately, FCPS plans to reduce our student population. It's the "how" part that needs to be worked out.

You keep saying "Circulated."
Circulated where and among whom

The task force recommendations were reviewed at the Advanced Academic Programs Advisory Committee (AAPC) meeting on Tuesday night. Carol Horn did a presentation on the recommendations and had the committee members provide written feedback.

Materials that were circulated are posted on the FCAG website:
