How painful is Mirena insertion?

Getting mine inserted on Monday -- what should I expect?

I found it quite painful for 5 seconds. I've had friends who didn't notice. It's fine either way.

My doctor offered a pain medication before insertion. With it, I felt nothing. I did have some mild cramping that day but other than that was fine.

I took 800mg of motrin before hand. No pain.

It hurts for just a few seconds when they clamp your uterus. Other than that it's fine.

Definitely meant to say clamp your cervix.

Insertion wasn't bad at all. No more uncomfortable for me than a pap smear. The next 24 hours were like the worst menstrual cramps of my life. That was a year ago, and it's been smooth sailing ever since. I'm happy with it.

I agree with 13:44. The insertion itself was no big deal. Just a second or two of pinching or something, but I had just had my daughter 2 1/2 months earlier, so the concept that THAT would even register as pain didn't compute!! But the cramps for about a day afterwards were enough for me to take notice, but not enough to sideline me in any way. I've posted on her before on this issue too - I had a strange side effect that my doctor didn't know about but when I looked it up online I could find corroboration - for about two weeks everything tasted metallic. But it went away and it's been great ever since.

I have had two babies and the Mirena insertion was the most painful thing I have ever experienced. I thought I was going to pass out and vomit all at the same time. After about 6 weeks I had to have it pulled out because I could always feel it. I hope for your sake your experience is different than mine. I would never consider it again.

No worse than a pap. Really no big deal. No major cramping in the days following either.

I was expecting it to be really painful, but this was my experience too

This is really unusual - OP, make sure that your provider has experience inserting IUDs.

I felt something similar to a mild labor contraction for a couple seconds, and then some mild menstrual-like cramps after that. I took a dose of motrin and was fine. I am on my second IUD and won't go back to any other form of birth control (until DH gets snipped...)

Mine was really painful too and so was my friend's. I really think it varies. I wouldn't do it again... and I'd definitely take a painkiller beforehand just in case.

no pain at all. not even as uncomfortable as a pap smear.
i didn't have any cramping or anything afterward either... just spotting for what seems like forever. it was inserted about 8 weeks ago and i'm still spotting off and on. i'm also breastfeeding and have seen no effect on it.
