Casey Anthony's Lawyer Jose Baez on his phone texting in court? Really

Anonymous
Whether or not you think Casey is innocent or guilty - today he was either reading on his phone and/or texting during open court. Really? Totally disrespectful. I would not want him to be my attorney. Her life is on the line and he is enjoying the fame a little too much.

I'd like to hear what the attorneys on this forum think. He appears to be the dumbest defense attorney out there and way in over his head. I don't care for the chick, but she's not doing herself any favors by putting him at the helm.

Why do you always post this?

Maybe he's gathering last minute research trying to come up with yet another scenario. Since nobody is buying the drowning story.

Could it have been about the case? Maybe he emailed/texted a staff support person? Not trying to defend him but is it necessarily personal?

This case keeps getting weirder and weirder.

It is getting hard to buy the prosecutors story as well

Possibly laying the groundwork for an ineffective assistance of counsel claim. . . .

Is he related to Joan Baez?

Attorney here.

I don't know what was being televised, but a hell of a lot happens during a trial that is not earth-shattering. There is "housekeeping" of all kinds -- procedural motions, docketing, etc. He also has other clients toward whom he has obligations. And he has to communicate with his staff about bringing over exhibits of all kinds for the defense of Ms. Anthony. I don't see this as unusual in any way.

I thought phones were not allowed in most courtrooms. Re: dumbest defense attorney-why? Because of the drowning/molestation combo?

It's not just possible, it's definite. Not only is trying to set up an IAC claim common, it's practically required of DP defense attorneys. DP cases aren't even close to finished when the jury returns the verdict in the penalty phase. There are YEARS of appeals to wade through and anything an appellate attorney can argue is another issue to try to undo the jury's verdict.

Maybe the attorney was texting Anthony Weiner.

Another attorney here. I would never, ever, ever pull out my phone while the judge was on the bench.

His inexperience constantly shows. I agree, he is in over his head and would not want him representing me. Lack of inexperience is his problem.
