I Smell Like Placenta

Anonymous
Ever since I got pregnant I don't like how I smell. Showers and scrubbing do not get rid of it and it's driving me nuts. I smell like.....amniotic fluid and placenta. I am not imagining things. I remember the "after birth" smell very well.

How do I get rid of this? Dietary changes? 5 showers a day? Drenching myself in perfume?

I'm sure it is just your super-senstive pregnancy nose running amock. Have you tried putting some Vick's under your nose?
Anonymous
No, I haven't tried putting anything under my nose.

I am very self conscious because I feel like other people can smell it because it is very strong. I do not have the courage to ask my husband if I smell birthy because it's embarrassing.

Unless you are leaking amniotic fluid, you don't smell like it. You have it inside you, just like you have urine inside you. The placenta is inside you, just like your liver. Do you smell like liver and stomach too?

Well Captain Happy, I have never smelled my liver or stomach before, so even if I did smell like it, I wouldn't know. Thanks for adding to the discussion though.

It was funny! Come on, admit it, it was funny. I was trying to make you laugh.

even when I was leaking amniotic fluid it didn't really have a smell to it. Lochia... completely different story. How far along are you?

I feel like I smell too, what has helped me
Get a different soap, I got dial to wash armpits and "down there" and wash with a washcloth or a soft brush his really helped
Also I had to switch deodorants, I rotate through a couple different ones
Panty liners, the scented ones, change multiple times a day

I can't say for sure, but I strongly suspect that no one else can smell this but you. One of the crazy side-effects of pregnancy is an over-active sense of smell. At least it was for me both times around!

What does Placenta smell like? I've had three kids and I wouldn't know the smell if it slapped me in the face.

12:24 It's probably just me which is a relief but I am still self conscious

12:26 I don't know what to compare it to. It just smells like birth. It's a distinct smell that I will probably never forget. My husband knows the smell too because I remember him asking me to please wash an item of clothing because it smelled like placenta...and it did. That's why I am so self conscious now.

Whether or not someone has smelled "birth" probably depends on where they gave birth, how much bleeding there was, and how alert they were during and after.

If your husband told you to wash a pair of pants that smelled like placenta, he surely would have mentioned if you smell like placenta.

This is hilarious! I think if you need a scrub brush or god forbid a hairbrush down there, you should try trimming!
