+1 Thank you so much for saying this! It makes me sad when I see people stereotype all Greek organizations into a single image. The reality is way broader than that. Personally, I loved my low-key, non-elite, light-partying sorority. We joked that we were the sorority for women who never thought they'd join a sorority, and yet we were a tight and fun group! (I'm still close with many of those women decades later, and it makes me sad to think I'd probably never have met them otherwise. The sorority was a wonderful experience, albeit secondary to my "core" group of friends who were either in different sororities or non-Greek. So yes - at most schools with Greek life, the sororities (and fraternities) run the gamut from super-selective to non-selective . . . and from super focused on partying to rarely partying as a group at all, and everything in between. Your DC will be fine in a school with Greek life as long as they are self-aware to know who they are and what they want, as well as confident enough to choose the type of people/lifestyle that feels true to them. Most have options for every type of kid - including those who are not into partying. And very few (if any?) schools are so dominated by Greek life that someone can't thrive if they opt out. Open mind + self awareness is the key to thriving in college, both when it comes to Greek life and more broadly. Good luck to your DC! |
It’s not that big of a difference, though. These schools are very, very similar in terms of academic reputation. |
Davidson is a very good school, but a tier below Haverford, Swarthmore, Williams and Amherst. |
Yes, and top tier and 2nd tier SLACs are very, very similar in terms of academic reputation… |
LOL! What a silly comment. You are misinformed. |
What are the differences between these schools and Davidson? Please be specific. I don’t see how you can determine this. It’s like splitting hairs. |
Why do you care so much? |
I don’t. I am asking why you do. (Or, again, what’s the difference? I think academically they are probably the same) |
? I am saying I don’t think there is a difference so since you do, can you please explain what the difference is. |
Both great schools with unique strengths, can't go wrong. In terms of info that seems important here, and that can be compared, here is a quick overview:
USNWR Ranking: Davidson 16, Haverford 21 WSJ Ranking: Davidson 30, Haverford 41 Niche Ranking: Davidson 5, Haverford 15 2023 Acceptance Rate: Davidson 14.5%, Haverford 12.9% Med School "Feeder" Ranking: Davidson 19, Haverford not in Top 30 (www.collegetransitions.com/dataverse/top-feeders-medical-school) Law School "Feeder Ranking: Haverford 12, Davidson not in Top 30 (www.collegetransitions.com/dataverse/top-feeders-law-school) Endowment Per Student: Davidson 39 ($655k), Haverford 63 ($430k) Campus: Davidson 841 acres, Haverford 200 aces |
Not really but if it makes your snotty New England or mid-Atlantic ass feel better to make this claim, go ahead. The hairs you’re splitting will probably just fall out in a few years anyway. |
Based on the stats cited above, Davidson can only be considered a top tier LAC. |
There are some really crazy Davidson parents on this site. |
yeah, i don't know if it's one or multiple but they are a little too in love with the school. It's off putting. It's a lovely school. It's quite odd when a parent of an enrolled student stalks DCUM for years after their own kid matriculated to gush over the school. Move on. You're not doing your kid's school any favors! |
It's also off putting when people say others are crazy just because they're sharing their love of and information about a college that someone asked for opinions on... |
