I think I just ate an undercooked hard boiled egg

Anonymous
not exactly sure but the outside of the peeled egg was slightly slimy. The inside was not runny but I generally feel pretty disgusting now. Not sure if it is psychosomatic. I am 39 weeks pregnant. what is the worst that can happen for me and the baby?

You and the baby are fine.

Your baby could have a paranoid hypochondriac for a mom.

I hope you feel better now!

haha, totally agree. first of all if an egg were undercooked the inside would be soft, not the outside. slime on the outside (inside the shell) probably means there was a small crack when it was boiled and some water got in there, making it wet (and slimy) when you peeled it. second, the egg would have to be really runny to create a real risk of salmonella - think fried with runny yolk. third, even then salmonella is pretty rare in eggs, notwithstanding the huge recall last year.

I second that if the yolk was cooked then you can rest assured that the whole thing cooked long enough to kill off anything that might hurt you and/or baby... fret not Best wishes for your impending delivery!

Not nice. But very funny!

Good luck OP. We've all been there.

I read in Panic-Free Pregnancy (which I recommend highly!) that only 1/20,000 eggs has salmonella, and that salmonella poisoning is no worse for you when pregnant than when you're not.

So if you ate a raw egg a day for 54 years, you would, statistically speaking, end up with salmonella once.

I was a little careful because there was a salmonella outbreak while I was pregnant, but wouldn't worry about your potentially not all the way cooked egg. (After outbreak, I started making cookie dough with pasteurized eggs because I didn't trust myself to not snarf cookie dough while baking. Before that, I just ate the cookie dough straight)

You should be fine. I realized after I had my baby that I'd eaten eggs benedict - with hollandaise (and undercooked egg) about 10 times during the middle of my pregnancy. Doh! While salmonella is a risk, it's not an especially large one, and a 39-week-old fetus is a lot stronger than a much younger one. No worries.

I've been eating a lot of eggs benedict, too. It wasn't on my radar and I didn't know you couldn't eat it. I think you're fine!

OP, you're fine. I have been eating raw eggs throughout pregnancy (38 weeks now) and have had no problems. (I love a particular food that you mix a raw egg into.)

As per the PP who mentioned the statistics, I've been eating about 1-2 raw eggs per week for almost a decade and have never had any issues. Not saying you should try it, but you can put your mind at ease.

That is a genius idea. Screw the cookies, I just want the dough. I'm not overly freaked out about salmonella but I do avoid raw egg where possible, just in case.
