Moving from NYC to Baltimore area - need help with schools

Anonymous
Hi - We are moving from New York City to the Baltimore area, my husband will be working at Hopkins. We have one child with effectively treated ADHD and one with a mild auditory processing issue/dysgraphia. Both are in a small mainstream nurturing private school in NYC, and we would love to find a great public school system in the Baltimore suburbs that has support for kids with learning issues or ADHD, but provides excellent academics as well. Does anyone have any specific suggestions of school/districts/towns for us to look at? We have already gotten some town recommendations, but would love to hear from people who specifically have kids in school now. Our kids will be entering 3rd and 5th grade when we move, so we are interested in both elementary and middle schools.

Thanks so much in advance for any suggestions!

Howard County School, check out Columbia and Ellicott city as nice places to live. Howard county schools are the best in the area. I don't know neighborhoods.

Just my impression, but I think there are facts to back up, look on the web.

We almost moved to Howard County. Ended up in Vienna, VA instead due to work issue. Did tons of research and I think if you looks In Howard County, you probably can't go wrong in the Centennial and River Hill Schools Districts.

The Towson area of Baltimore County is a nice place to live. Anywhere in the central district of the county has good schools.

Hi, We live in Howard County and I used to work at Hopkins. I can't speak for the public schools in North Baltimore, but as another poster mentioned, the Howard County public schools are wonderful. In terms of neighborhoods with the best school systems, your best bet is to find a house in the Centennial School district in Ellicot City, or in the River Hill school district in Columbia/Clarksville. The commute to Hopkins is about 30-35 minutes during rush hour, so very doable. The special education accommodations are good (if, in fact, your kids need that instead of a 504 plan or just a very nurturing school/team/teacher. Good luck and welcome!

The previous posted listed 2 high schools in Howard County she/he recommends. Now you need to call the school system and ask which schools feed into those schools. That will tell you middle and elementary schools.

Hi, I posted previously about the Howard County schools. The Centennial district is Centennial High School and one of the good elementaries is Centennial Lane, although there are other great ones that feed into Centennial High. Similarly, for River Hill HS, one is Clarksville Elementary and another is Pointer's Run. But, yes, call the school board for the others that feed into it. Good luck.
