Alec Baldwin fatally shot someone on movie set with gun mishap

I think Alec may be headed to jail.

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A movie weapons supervisor was sentenced to 18 months in prison in the fatal shooting of a cinematographer by Alec Baldwin on the set of the Western film “Rust,” at a sentencing hearing Monday in a New Mexico state court.

Movie armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was convicted in March by a jury on a charge of involuntary manslaughter in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and has been held for more than a month at a county jail on the outskirts of Santa Fe.

Baldwin, the lead actor and co-producer for “Rust,” was pointing a gun at Hutchins when the revolver went off, killing Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza.

Baldwin has pleaded not guilty to a charge of involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of Halyna Hutchins. He is scheduled for trial in July at a courthouse in Santa Fe.

Doubtful. It was the armorer's job to make sure the gun fired blanks.

It's the other way around. The armorer has been found guilty and sentenced. This was her job.

That means it's unlikely that Alec will go to jail. And IMO shouldn't, but opinions clearly vary.

Have you seen models lately? They are aggressively ugly, show off stringy sweaty armpit hair, and are seemingly in a competition for who can be the most viscerally repulsive.

+1. Two people were convicted for handing him a loaded gun and saying it was unloaded.

I'd watch! Train wreck!

Guess this is the reality show the Baldwins have been seeking.

Sounds a bit like a Kelsey and Camille Grammer situation…

I watched most of the trial - it was noteworthy how little emotion she showed, but I’m a former defender and prosecutor so I know all about how clients are counseled to appear impassive because whichever way you emote can be held against you by a jury.

But at sentencing it’s another story; we strenuously encourage our clients to express true remorse and accountability for the behavior to earn mercy from the judge.

This woman simply couldn’t rise to the task. She let loose some crocodile tears at a couple of moments during the victim impact statements, but when she spoke on her own behalf it was glaringly obvious how lacking in empathy she actually was.

She called Halyna’s death a tragedy, but with zero acknowledgment of her own negligence - she sees herself as a victim of the tragedy. And apparently on the jail calls she demeaned the jurors, calling them stupid a-holes and the like.

So my assessment as a former prosecutor and defender is that Hannah Gutierrez Reed has a disordered personality - maybe borderline, maybe narcissistic. She’s missing the empathy chip and she will be a danger to others in any profession that requires due care for others. She’ll never possess firearms again and never work as an armorer again - she might be just right as a plus size model once she’s eaten 3 food for 18 months.

Alec was offered a plea deal, but he did not accept it and it was rescinded.

Some interesting details in the article such as:

"The special prosecutors also claimed in the court filing that Baldwin was allegedly “pressuring material witnesses in the case against him to submit to interviews” for a documentary he’s making about Hutchins.

For the prosecutors, that was the final straw. “It was at this point that the plea offer was rescinded, and the case was scheduled for grand jury,” they wrote."

Are these the same prosecutors who initially said they weren't going to charge him? And then, after pressure but no change in facts, changed their mind? He wasn't going to plea. He feels terrible and guilt but not culpable.

“Do you feel guilt?” Stephanopoulos asked.

“No. no,” Baldwin said.
