At what age did you move from a sleep sack to a blanket in the crib?

DD is 8 1/2 months old and has just started to stand up in her crib. The past 3 mornings she has woke up, stood up and silently stood in her bed for I don't know how long. I didn't know it was happening until this morning when she fell over, hit her head and then started crying. So obviously I'm going to drop the mattress today but I'm now wondering if it's time to move her out of sleep sacks since she is trying to cruise around in the crib. Instead of buying more sleep sacks that have the feet holes, I'd rather move to a blanket, but I'm a little nervous.

When did you transition your child from a sleep sack to a blanket?

I would wait until at least a year. It's probably fine but I wouldn't take the chance. Plus if she's moving around the crib that much she probably wouldn't even keep a blanket on.

Good point. I didn't think of that!

14 mo is still in a sleep sack (and walks around just fine with it). She'd never sleep with a blanket on - the few times I've tried she actually gets aggravated at it being in the way and gets twisted up in it. But her room was too cold IMO for her to be without something. Maybe as the weather gets warmer we'll transition her out of the sleep sack since her room wont be so cold.

We just moved our daughter to a blanket at age 2 and she actually stays under it and likes it -- but her older siblings could barely handle a blanket at age 3. They just wore warm pajamas.

My 15 mo son can race around the crib in a sleep sack, no problem. However, when he's *not* in a sleepsack he's been trying to figure out how to climb the crib bars (he can kind of grip them with his toes), so he'll be in a sleep sack so long as he's in a crib, to keep him from climbing out. Also, given how much he rolls around the crib while asleep, a blanket would never work. We keep our bedroom cold, so he gets warm pjs + warm sleepsack.

They figure out how to walk around in the sleep sack. My 18 mos old is still using one and I don't see that changing anytime soon. He's all over his crib at night. He'd never keep a blanket on.

2 1/2 yo twins still in sleep sacks. We'll switch to a blanket when we move to big kid beds probably.

My 18 month old is still in a sleep sack and she darn nearly runs from one half of the crib to the next in it. Your child probably fell because she is just 8 1/2 months old, not necessarily because of the sleep sack. I'd happily put my DD in with a blanket but it would be shoved in the corner about 10 minutes after she fell asleep and she'd be uncovered.

We just switched at 21 months and it's been a mixed bag. 8/9 months is too young for safety reasons, I think.

9:15 pp here--for those still using sleep sacks with toddlers, have you found cotton ones with the foot holes? (sorry to hijack your thread OP!)

We're still using sacks at 19 months, and don't plan to switch soon! Our kid figured out he could climb out with his sweaty little feet on the side of the crib, so it'll be sleep sacks til we're in a big boy bed!

Still using sleep sacks with a 22 month old. But, only have the fleece ones with foot holes. I'll have to look for lighter weight ones for spring with the holes. Hope they exist!

DS is 12 mo and has used (and stayed under) a blanket since about 6 months. Just depends on the kid.

another 22 month old with a sleep sack. he's moving to a real bad soon, so i figure i'll hold out on using blankets until then. we still use the traditional ones (no leg holes), but he's getting too tall for the XL.
