They don't call it a sandy swamp. Or an alligator habitat. Or even a murky dirty place where scary Florida creatures reside.

They call it a beach. They call all of those white sand areas beaches. Heck, they even named one of their upscale resorts the Beach Club Villa.

And surprise! And guess what the guests do at the beach at the Beachclub Villa? Surprise!! They walk along the water and let their kids play and wade in the shallows.

The one we went to they even gave the kids buckets and shovels for the beach

I'm the OP of this thread. I rarely am an OP, but I started it because I'm so sad, shocked, heartbroken (there aren't even words to describe) about this tragedy. I wish I could process it, but it is beyond horrifying. Maybe it's because I grew up near Disney and have such happy childhood memories (and now have a toddler boy of my own) that this little boy's death really hit me.

I should have foreseen that this would devolve into a blame the parents debate. Apparently I gave DCUM too much credit and thought that other parents would be sympathetic. Some of the nasty responses on here just make me even more sad.

Actually on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 7PM the calendar lists "Campfire and Marshmallows on the beach."

Perhaps those arguing whether or not these are beaches, could let Disney know they are spreading misinformation.

Are we talking about the same place? Pretty sure resorts exaggerate locale. Orlando is filled with resorts and resort style dining. Rainforest Cafe isn't really a rainforest nor a cafe'?! Get out of town!

OP again -- also, when I posted this, no facts were known about how the incident happened. The news articles about the wading, signs, etc. didn't come out until the next morning. I just sort of assumed that something so universally awful could not possibly be divisive.

I now feel sad that I created something that has shown such vitriol in people that the parents could possibly read someday, but I imagine if I hadn't posted it someone else would have.

My heart just aches for this family. Perhaps it is time for this thread to be locked and/or deleted?

I think this thread is very important. The death of this child is horrible. If nothing else, I hope that it makes parents more aware of the waters in Florida and for them to not let their guard down, no matter where they're traveling.

I don't blame the parents. I think Disney is getting a raw deal also. I went to Polynesian resort in 1973. Shortly after it opened. Disney rented boats to anyone to go on that lake. I dropped of my parent on one of the islands and then picked them back up. People had no fears of anything in the water then. I vaguely remember a pool right on the beach and wandering around the beach at night after a lua dinner.

Still Disney should pay and pay big time. Someone in their companies was responsible for safety. Someone fell down on the job

Probably because they started hiring Guest workers to do US workers job. They deserve to pay.

Saying something is the fault of the parents (I believe they are partly responsible) does not mean we are not sorry for their loss and aren't saddened by the little boy's death.
