My kid will start daycare for the first time at age 2. Are there favorite lunch ideas you can share with me...it can't be warmed up. thanks

we do a lot of sunbutter and jam (daycare is nut free), hard boiled eggs, pasta salad, cold soba noodles and edamame, pita and hummus, cut up cold chicken, plain yogurt with frozen berries mixed in. some other great ideas here: http://www.cookingwithmykid.com/recipes/school-lunch-ideas/

PP had some great ideas. You can also do other types of sandwiches/wraps, yogurt, or buy a thermos and pack leftovers in that

Whole wheat turkey wraps, with cheese and mild guac. When he was that age, I cut them into thin wagon wheels to eat more easily. The guar never turned brown either. Look for lemon juice as one ingredient.

Is it unusual for a daycare to provide a hot lunch?

Here are some suggestions that you do the quick processed way or the all natural, organic cooking route, whichever you prefer.

When you include a cold ice pack....
*My kids actually liked some foods cold even if they should be hot such as pancakes, waffles, even french toast. They did not start eating them with syrup until they were around 4 or 5.
*small yogurt container (no go gurts, there seems to be a univeral preschool ban on these do to excessive squirting)
*meat sandwhich turkey or ham thinly sliced deli, processed or thinly sliced from something you cooked
*tortilla rolled with ham and cheese..or with my kids it has to be sent separately and they either decide to roll it or eat it separately
*cold chicken
*cold pasta
*fruit..whatever they like
*cold corn (go figure), cucumber slices, tiny carrots (I buy the bag already peeled), or whatever they like
*cream cheese on mini bagels
*cheese slices or squares and crackers
*bag of dried cereal..one of my kids loves to snack on Wheaties

You can also get a small sized thermos and send Mac and Cheese, soup or ravioli. Everything else needs to be unrefrigerated so things wokr like fruit, veggies, or applesauce in small containers, or the fruit cups that are shelf stable are an option with crackers.
