Not surprised at all. The handwriting was on the wall. I hate to say it, but this is not the only surprise that parents will receive in the upcoming weeks. Wait until they see what is going on with the teachers. I don't think anyone knows which teachers are for sure coming back or who the new teachers are. I feel so bad for the SSMA parents. |
Troll vindicated. How often does that happen? |
Do you know this for sure or are you just speculating? |
PP, we also haven't gotten the email. We were offered a spot, accepted Friday, and never got confirmation. Maybe we aren't on the official enrolled list and that's why we got no email? |
PP here, and that is our situation as well. Have received no contact since then. We aren't taking the spot now, but I guess what does it matter. I'm sure they have more important things to worry about. |
I know! I was super annoyed and aggressive about the "troll." Still think it was shitty to do it the way they did it. |
Sela once occupied the lower level space when I toured the school last year. It was the two PK4 classroom. Maybe the enrollment is down and they will only occupy the space above. |
This is bad news for SSMA in terms of looking competent, but should assuage some of the concerns about losing diversity by locating in Ward 3 (with that said, I would think the Glover Park and the Chillum Place sites would be just as hard to get to from, say, the Anacostia metro station...one might be easier by car and the other by public transit).
It's probably also good news for Sela, since they'll get some rental income and possibly be able to combine things like school meals and afterschool care. |
+1 Been following this saga, so sorry for the parents, kids and teachers going through all this. I know unexpected things happen, but this has all the earmarks of a VERY poorly managed process. Good luck all! Especially worried about the people who accepted over the weekend, when SSMA already knew they would not be on Wisconsin Ave! Maybe those parents should take that issue to PCSB and - if the Sela location absolutely would not work for a parent or if the parent said yes in large part because of the Wisconsin Ave location - maybe there is something PCSB can do for parents who can prove they accepted over this past weekend? |
Silver lining for parents who were shut out in the lottery--show up the first day at SS saying you accepted a spot. Based on their epic fail with the location debacle they'd be hard pressed to turn you away. On the other hand, There will be so many complaints racked up with the charter board that their charter is likely in jeopardy. |
I don't think the charter board is much onto enforcing. Too busy making money. |
As a parent in Petworth, I have mixed feelings about this.
Minuses: It's a sign that the administration is still extremely poor at communication. The space lacks a playground and is overall a less desirable facility than the other location. It's likely temporary, which means uprooting the school again at some point in the not-too-distant future (so no real investments in the infrastructure will be made) Pluses: Location, location, location (for those of us in Petworth at least). That cross-park drive was probably going to murder my sanity and ability to get to work on time. Diversity: I think we'll retain a good ethnic and SES mix going forward, whereas I feel pretty confident that a Ward 3 charter will rich-whiteify pretty quickly. |
We still have not received any communication from the school. Were offered a space Friday and accepted that day. Poor form. |
Yeah, it was the same for us until I asked. Apparently those of us that accepted over the weekend should have been on the email list but were not. |
