They're 67% in state. The reason the HPY obsessed crowd looks down on UVA is that their admissions rate for in state is so high.

The guidance counselors in my school district go out of their way to discourage students from applying to UVa because the chances have gotten so slim. A superintendant actually implied that the stress from trying to get in was causing serious mental health problems.

40% admissions rate. The links that get shared here all the time show that Fairfax and London have higher admissions rates than the state average.

If your kid isn't filthy rich and/or 10/10 attractive they're not getting bids to top tier Greek houses, so they'll just be non-entities at a public U.

+1. I think it's

1) the U of Maryland students and graduates
2) the parents of UVA students who didn't get in
3) the UVA applicant students who didn't get in
4) The Virginia Tech students (there's a long-standing rivalry between UVA and VT)
5) The NoVA parents who are frustrated that they pay so much in taxes but can't get their kids into the top Virginia universities (who didn't even bother to apply because their child doesn't have the 4.40 GPA, and 33 ACT)
6) all compounded by the recent statistics of how difficult it was to get into VT this year.
