OP here, THANKS SO MUCH!! These are great tips. I actually picked up a new pair of jeans today - dark wash, slight boot cut. I think they will work nicely with flats. I have another pair that will work w/ boots or heels.

PP - did you buy the flats in Sunflower, or another color?

I bought them in fuschia, and after they arrived and I realized how much I liked them, I ordered the blue ones as well.

I would splurge on a nicer pair of jeans if you can (look for sales at the department stores). Somehow even if the rest of my outfit is super casual, I feel great when I have my favorite jeans on. I like a skinny leg (citizens of humanity, paige, and joe jeans all seem to work well with slim figures).

Longer tunics in a variety of colors, paired with ballet flats, skinny jeans, and a longer necklace are a great everyday look.

Wrap sweater.

Flat boots.

I don't think khakis have been "in" for women in several years. They're not classic basics, they're leftovers from a moment in time. Which moment? Well, remember those GAP adds with the swing dancers? Must've been '97-ish.

i third the no khakis...

you can also get some cute shirts at dillards (online) for very cheap if you look at the sale section. you might one to swap out one or two of the fitted t-shirts for something with some print/detail.

Why no khaki's? Ann Taylor Loft has khaki's in several colors including chocolate brown and coal.

Where does one get this 'hemming tape' - i need it as I just bought a pair of jeans that fit great, except they are long.

Anne Taylor sells them because people shop there for work. Some stores still carry more updated versions of khakis for people who need them for a business casual work wordrobe. They are not a staple, they are an alternative to suit pants or the lower part of your uniform if you work at Blockbuster.
