TV programs/cartoons for 2 year old

We do noggin at our house. My kids love Max and Ruby, and DH and I HATE them. If they were real, they would be in foster care because there is hardly ever an adult around. Ruby is seven and takes Max on a bus into town, and lets him go into stores alone. Max doesn't listen, and brings pint after pint of sherbet into the bathtub with him. Until I really started watching, I thought they were really cute, now I see them for the bad example they truly are.

When asked about Max and Ruby's parents, my 4 year old says they are dead.

i stick to videos we check out at the library for my 3 year old. i find it's too hard to get him to turn off the TV when a show ends. videos are easier to control. i'm not sure he knows the difference and he's totally happy to watch the same things over and over again.

PPs, I don't know why but your posts are totally making me laugh, with your takes on these shows.

- They do in fact say "shut up" on Sprout once in a while, during Thomas shows. One engine will tell another to shut up. I was shocked by this, actually

-- to the PP who said Thomas and his friends are creepy and need therapy .... why? what should I be looking for here? My son LOVES these stories (perhaps unnaturally so) and now I'm thinking he's going to grow up to play Emo music and live under a bridge, by choice.

-- does anyone else hate Calliou? My sis refers to him as a whiny a$$ [w]itch, and I'm positive he has taught my son to whine and complain in ways that he did not know of before he saw this show.

We call Calliou Whinou. i can not stand that kid, I would give him up for adoption if he were mine. I will not let my children watch that, I get enough whine without the help of him.

Made me laugh b/c mine said same thing. Scary.

These posts are hilarious. I totally agree with Caillou - my son will yell "MOMMY!" in a whiny voice just like Caillou does on the show. Did you ever notice, too, that Caillou is always watching Rosie (the sister) while the parents are nowhere to be found. What is she about 18 months old?? And why is he bald???

Anyway, we DVR most of our shows so when they are finished, we just turn off the tv. My son loves Dora and Diego, although there are only about 10 episodes of Diego so we watch the same ones over and over again. HE also likes Thomas and has recently gotten into Wonder Pets which I also find really annoying. We did have to upgrade our Directv package in order to get Sprout - pathetic I know!

Cracking up over the Calliou comments. Our 23 months old daughter LOVES that show. The other day she even got excited during the open and called out all the characters names, including 'Mr. Hinkle." Wtf? She knows Hinkle?!! We find Calliou to be totally whiney and the Dad to be a big dork, but I do have to say I like the mom. My mom once watched it with my daughter and couldn't remember the name of the show.. so she desrbied it saying, "the boy has a funny name and the mom is a little on the heavy side, like a real woman." I loved that!
Also worth noting... anyone see the eps when they go to the beach? Both Calliou and his dad don't have nipples.
Okay, to answer the real question, though... Our daughter likes other shows on Sprout - Noddy, Sagwa, Angelina Ballerina and likes to see the annoying girl do the Good Night Show. We're all big fans of "Jack's Big Music Show" on Nickolodean - my husband rocks out to that one and it's not too sacharine like the rest.
My favorite is and always will be Sesame Street, but for now my daughter really only gets into Elmo and Big Bird. Oh well... I guess they do have minds of their own!

This is really interesting to me because my son just turned three last week and he's been really scared by some of the plots on Bob the Builder, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and Little Einsteins.

I try to stick with Handy Manny and Tigger and Pooh and the all-time favorite for him and his sister: Blue's Clues.

Blue's Clue's is horrible. Okay, beyond horrible. But they love it and it's never scary. And if you're read the book The Tipping Point, you'll know why kids love it - years and year of research about what kids love.

Non-stop whining evidently causes your hair to fall out.

If you think Calliou's annoying, try watching a full episode of Little Bear on Noggin. I'm a PP that really likes Noggin, but Little Bear makes both my DH and me just sick. On a side note, our son loves the Cars movie. It's a bit old for him but, even so, I was shocked that the movie includes the phrase "Hillbilly Hell" a number of times, as well as the younger car referring to the older race care as an "idiot." Given the good messages in the movie I was disappointed by the use of these phrases.

Agree with Noggin and Sprout (which are on digital cable). Definitely check out WonderPets -- I actually find it tolerable, and my son LOVES it.

We also like Sesame Street and have recently rediscovered Mister Rogers. There's something extremely calming about it, and my son just loves it.

ROFL on Caillou comments- I cannot stand him! DC at 2+ likes noggin and sprout shows- I also used to allow the Wiggles- i am SO lucky DC is winding out of that since they are annoying me- did you know that Jeff is single and 54? Yup- I looked it up- augh- I hear Dora song at night- "swiper no swiping" - DH is surprised that they have a swiper character! Dora is the king right now here.. Wonder Pets are cute but not consistently loved (well, at least picky DC wanted to try eating celery), for some reason super why (which is about spelling) is a hit too.. I cringe at admiting this but for some reason sponge bob came on and DC said "sponge bob squarepants"- ack- did I leave the tv on too long? DC shouldn't be watching him!

DS watches Sesame Street and then videos - usually Baby Einstein. He also loves watching some things on Animal Channel although we screen everything on there...I still can't watch some of the shows...I hate when things are eaten by other animals! I am on bed rest so we started a little early (16 months) so that we could do something while I was reclined in bed other than reading and having a short 'conversation'. I am amazed at how attentive he can be to some shows - mesmerized almost- but yet shows no interest yet in others (Barney, Bob the Builder).

Super Why on PBS. It has super heros that build words and change the ending to stories. My son loves the pig that sings the "ABC song".

Anonymous wrote:Watch out for the commercials. Many of the recommended shows are fine, but the stations show way too many materialistic grabby commercials.

At that age, I always put on whatever cartoons the spanish stations showed (we don't speak spanish, but it didn't matter to my son). Since these were primarily low budget stations, the adds were for lawyers, and other things a two year old could ignore. Disney made me sick.

Noggin and sprout do not show commericals. Disney is noe commerial after another, like watching Oprah.
